I wouldn't mind some old school drive in theaters popping up though!
Broken business model, COVID-19 just 1 more nail in the coffin. days of the neighborhood movie theater are definitely numbered.
AMC is a China owned business.
I used to love going to theaters, but modern electronics and terrible social behaviors say to stay home and enjoy the movies.
Its a substitute but not the same as seeing a great film on the big screen. We are a social species. With a few exceptions, people need to interact with others socially as much as we need food and water for healthy living. Sequestered at home in the living room is not a long term solution. This pandemic freakout has unfortunately changed our lives for the worse, even once we are up and running again.
Been a bad few weeks for models.
The few times I've gone to IMAX it has been ok, but seems over-hyped to me. I probably won't go back. I'll never bother going back to a "regular" theater either. I would go to the recliner/beer theater. I'd also go to a drive in just for the nostalgia factor. A warm summer night, lawn chairs in the back of the pickup parked backward... Those were fun nights. Otherwise, I'll just stay home and pick what I want from a streaming service, viewing on my 65" Samsung and running the audio out through my stereo. The nice thing about home is the drinks & snacks are exactly what I want and it can be paused for an intermission anytime.
Don’t really have a dog in this fight, as I don’t go to movies at the theater hardly anymore. But this sort of strikes me as bad timing for AMC. They will be hard-pressed to get people to come back to the theater once the restrictions ease up. Limiting their movie selections isn’t going to help them.
That is OK. I quit going to the overpriced movie theaters long ago and will not support Hollywood anyway. I wish they would go the way of the buggy whip and reinvent good books to read.
AMC is a Chinese owned operation now. F them.
AMC, China's largest cinema chain...
I have a pretty nice setup but it's still not the same as going to a real movie theater. It's like going to a real football game instead of just watching it on TV. It's just not the same experience. The thing that keeps me from going to a movie very often is not the theater but that so many movies are of the "celebrate perversity" kind.
AMC is china owned.
Let's see now; Universal Studios has a product (movies) that the consumer wants, the middleman (AMC Theaters) won't deliver it (boycott), Universal Studios cuts out the middleman and delivers the product directly to the consumer. Hmmm...good luck your bankruptcy AMC Theaters.
Exactly, the number of theaters will decline as people find viewing at home more convenient and a more pleasant environment.
“And people have some pretty sweet TVs in the living room now with just as nice audio set ups.”
Plus you can get past second base at home much easier.
I love movie theaters. It was great fun seeing people get up and cheer during the “Avengers: Endgame” credits that showed the actors’ signatures. I remember fondly the audience’s stunned reaction when Vader made his big reveal in “Empire”.
Movie theaters have neen innovating. You can buy tickets to specific seats on line so no need to wait in line to get best seats. Many more food and drink options. Nicer seats that recline with trays and cupholders. Enforcement of rules to stay quiet.
Is the Academy going to tell Universal that their films won’t qualify for Oscar consideration if they go immediately to streaming services?
Chinese owned, blows 900% profit margins, over-leveraged, and now cuts off it's own supply chain.
I haven’t been to the movies since moving to Baltimore. The nearest theater is an AMC, about 15-20 minutes drive away. If it’s like the one in Queens I occasionally went to, it has those reclining seats you have to reserve in advance. I found it skin-crawlingly repulsive to have to sit reclined next to some strange man, almost as close as if he were sharing a bed with me. That, and the very high price were two excellent reasons for me to avoid that theater. Oh, and the movies were either stupid, dirty, or both. Great way to save $16 a pop!
