She was never a stereotype.
That was my thought earlier this month when I heard that Mia, as the Land OLakes Native American maiden was known, had been taken off the butter box. She was gone, vanished, missing. I knew Mia had devolved into a stereotype in many peoples minds. But it was the stereotype some saw that bothered me.
North Dakota state Rep. Ruth Buffalo (D), for instance, told the Pioneer Press in St. Paul, Minn., that the Land OLakes image of Mia went hand-in-hand with human and sex trafficking of our women and girls by depicting Native women as sex objects. Others similarly welcomed the companys removal of the butter maiden as long overdue.
How did Mia go from being a demur Native American woman on a lakeshore to a sex object tied to the trafficking of native women? [ ]
Mias vanishing has prompted a social media meme: They Got Rid of The Indian and Kept the Land. That isnt too far from the truth. Mia, the stereotype that wasnt, leaves behind a landscape voided of identity and history. For those of us who are American Indian, its a history that is all too familiar.

Well talk to the libtards and other indians who claim to speak for you, and think it’s bad. Us normal people didn’t have a problem with it.
It was an homage not an insult.
In memory of Mia, I give you one hearty Tomahawk CHOP!!
I think it became an insult when creative people photoshopped Lizzy Warren onto it
I would rather see the beautiful girl on Land O Lakes than that those insufferable MAZOLA margarine commercials of the 1970s. “You call it corn, we call it Maze.”
The stupid sht corporations and people let politicians and shakedown artists blackmail them with, freedom is dead. We are surrendering cowards. I am not buying this brand.
There is always a liberal do gooder that will be offended for you if you aren’t.
Mia is MIA.
Well played, sir!
She certainly insults me!
Land O Flakes butter should be easy to boycott. Just don’t buy it. I won’t.
Many companies have white characters to portray their company’s brand. Land-O-Lakes was one of very few who actually used a women of color. And now that’s a bad thing?
Ive recently started talking about a phenomenon that is in many respects the opposite of a sociopath and one I will maintain is, for a cause I will hereafter mention, worse than sociopaths.
These I call socioempaths, not actual empaths like in sci-fi or fantasy stories actually gifted to feel what others feel, a form of emotional telepathy, but instead people who presume to know others feels based on nothing more than presumptions and stereotypes, people who are infamously able to be offended by proxy, by what they assume that others should be offended by.
Where sociopaths draw neigh inviolate lines between themselves and others socioempaths PRESUME that theyve overcome those walls naturally there ... at least with people they imagine are correct thinking for where they are pigeonholed ideologically by socioempaths.
What makes socioempaths worse than sociopaths is the way that socioempaths naturally clump together, drawing support from each other maybe even in the same moment they are living in terror of being called out by others like them for not being correct enough in their attitudes, so that at some level the ease by which they are offended by proxy or the degree to which they conform to whatever those around them seem to be doing at the moment is a posturing in hopes of being left alone ... and since of course this is a mindless process it is one easily manipulated by people with bad intentions.
So where sociopaths try to get others to go with them but may collectively be like herded cats, socioempaths are easily herded even without a human actively doing the herding (there is of course the spiritual realm).
That Mazola militant and her attitude....
“WE call it MAIZE!! Get it right, white boy!!!”
Oh, well, she’s my age so it must suck to be her, now.
And Ruth Bader Buffalo looks like she’s had too much Pow Wow Chow, so no wonder she can’t stand Mia the Land O’ Lakes maiden.
And geez my memory is gone, but wasn’t there a product featuring an Indian gal in a deerskin bikini? Maybe it was Hamm’s Beer.
History slips away, one act of cowardice at a time. Orwell warned us.
don’t you know we do not want any references to any American Indians anywhere....TPTB want to erase them from our culture and our history..../sarcasm/
Down the memory hole.
I must confess I cut out her knees and placed them elsewhere when I was young.
