Anti-abortion pregnancy centers adapt to new challenges, face increased demand during pandemic

Anti-abortion pregnancy centers are working to adapt during the fight against COVID-19 as social distancing restrictions are limiting access to health services and narrowing the window of time to receive them.

That pressure has made unintended pregnancies more nerve-racking.

“An unintended pregnancy is stressful anyway -- you add a pandemic and economic collapse onto that, and it’s even worse for them,” said Leslie Salazar-Carrillo, CEO of Pathway Health Clinic in San Diego, California.

The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), an affiliate network of more than 1,500 centers, sampled about 350 of their clinics and reported that 21 percent saw an increase in clients and patients, while 42 percent saw an increase in women seeking or open to abortions.

Jennifer Shelton, executive director at Real Options, said her health clinic in Allen, Texas, saw a 20-25 percent increase from the typical week in the number of calls she received from women determined to have abortions. Heartbeat International, which serves nearly 3,000 affiliates, said calls to its crisis pregnancy hotline have increased by 30 percent during the pandemic.

In interviews with Fox News, several pregnancy centers, which offer women health services and alternatives to abortion, and national anti-abortion organizations described how the coronavirus left women vulnerable to potential health complications and economic insecurity created by job loss.

Um...notwithstanding that there are pre-existing situations and many people were couples prior to March, if people aren't having casual encounters with relative strangers because bars etc being closed, shouldn't there be a DECREASE in unwanted pregnancies?

While those are elements to consider, I think what the article is saying is more that women who already knew they were pregnant or are learning they are pregnant are more likely to experience this as a “crisis” under the current circumstances.

For example, suppose a young, single woman, with a steady boyfriend, is pregnant. Now her grandmother, whom she was expecting would help with a baby, is sick or has died from Covid-19. The young mother has lost her job, her boyfriend has lost his job, and neither of them knows when they will be able to work again.

Even if the couple were married, they’re still facing a level of personal and economic stress that they wouldn’t have a couple of months ago.

I didn’t get that angle from the article. Thanks for helping me out.

A lot of “surprise” pregnancies (sigh ...) occur when young people are “in exclusive relationships,” as they put it. Often the couple have some thought that they might stay together long-term or even get married “someday,” but they don’t have the maturity to consider thinking things through and developing an actual plan for life.

No comment. It wouldn’t be a help.

Thank you. What I meant, was I didn’t even think of (nor did I see in the article any mention of) the stresses of job loss and/or COVID19 taking out elders who were expected to help care for the babies. And just to be clear, while I totally understand preexisting cohabitation arrangements can lead to baby-making (in fact, I expect a surge of CoronaBabies come Thanksgiving), my point was there should be SOME lowering of unwanted pregnancies to the extent bars etc are shut down.

That's a possibility. On the other hand, they could just be using apps to meet up at home.

I tend to disbelieve that youths are as dumb and lazy as elders make them out to be. So yes, apps may help get around the bar blockade. But I also know many youths are worried about Coronavirus more than are many of the older people, and many kids are generally anti-relationship or even casual hookup given all the #MeToo efforts.

At the margin, you may be right..,but at the margin, I may be right. It'll be interesting to see where the babies land in 7 months.

If I keep eating and not walking to work, I’ll have my own gravitational field in a few months.
