That pressure has made unintended pregnancies more nerve-racking.

Um...notwithstanding that there are pre-existing situations and many people were couples prior to March, if people aren't having casual encounters with relative strangers because bars etc being closed, shouldn't there be a DECREASE in unwanted pregnancies?

While those are elements to consider, I think what the article is saying is more that women who already knew they were pregnant or are learning they are pregnant are more likely to experience this as a “crisis” under the current circumstances.

For example, suppose a young, single woman, with a steady boyfriend, is pregnant. Now her grandmother, whom she was expecting would help with a baby, is sick or has died from Covid-19. The young mother has lost her job, her boyfriend has lost his job, and neither of them knows when they will be able to work again.

Even if the couple were married, they’re still facing a level of personal and economic stress that they wouldn’t have a couple of months ago.
