Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said this week that the country is not ready for sports to make a return amid the coronavirus pandemic and indicated that leagues should be ready to go without this sport for this season.
In an interview with The New York Times published on Monday, Fauci, who is one of top experts leading the White Houses coronavirus task force, said safety, for the players and for the fans, trumps everything when it comes to the question of when sporting events will be able to resume in the country.
If you cant guarantee safety, then, unfortunately, youre going to have to bite the bullet and say, We may have to go without this sport for this season, he continued.

Hey President Trump. You are giving this moron way too much power. Reel him in NOW or you’re going to lose the base that you had.
“I do a lot to avoid interacting with people in general.”
Are you saying that the weeks of shelter-in-place worked well for you? ;) That’s pretty much how we live our lives in retirement, too, but I want it to be MY idea — not Fauci’s!
Overall, apart from the 24/7 bombardment from the merchants of fear that the spouse believes no question, things are more or less ok.
I would like to see things open up, especially the mom and pop places.
This is really goalpost moving.
Certainly the Detroit Tigers can sell tickets and keep three empty ones between each group. They have plenty of empty seats.
Life is risk...if you look at everything through the lens of a “guarantee” you’ll never do anything. When people in power “order” us to live a certain way because they believe absolute guarantees are needed then the only result can be tyranny. I don’t think Fauci realizes the magnitude of what he’s saying...maybe he doesn’t like sports but for millions of working class folks it’s what gives them an escape from daily stresses.
How many pro-sport athletes have even been sick? ...die? They should be tested before a game and get back to competing - at least we’ll have something to watch while we live in this house-arrest.
...every day the cases & deaths come down, which is every day now, it gets more absurd.
Besides, the pro-athletes are going to be faced with their paychecks stopping. Do they really think the leagues are going to continue to pay them? Do they realize yet that they’re all going to have to take a pay cut? When this reality hits them I doubt a single one would object to resuming games.
When this all started, we had no idea of lethality, how virulent it was, who would fair worse, how long incubation was, etc. - now we do....as well as the fact that people will continue to distance and be cautious for a while. We succeeded in flattening-the-curve. We know the old and unhealthy need to be extra careful and probably shouldn’t go to a ball game. While there will be deaths, as there always is, I think it’s time to start getting everyone else through herd immunity. At some point it saves lives - but I doubt that is in their model, it only seems to model contractions and their mortality rates.
I still agree with easing into it - Wuhan cremated people 24/7 for weeks for a reason and NYC is not a hoax. I do believe the lock-down has had a massive effect, we shouldn’t underestimate the threat...and before anyone points to Sweden, contrary to popular belief, they did NOT DO NOTHING and their deaths per 1M people is much higher than ours. There’s still LOTS of variables we don’t know but one cannot justify the status quo at this point.
Says the fed employee raking it in.
Granted. But, if the goal is guaranteed safety, the “easing-in” phase will never end. We’ll all be the jackasses chasing the carrot at the end of the stick
Shut up, Fauci. You’ve been wrong on a continual basis.
Keep it up, I see lots of liberal pro athletes joining the republican ranks....
Sure going to miss the kneeling NFL players.
Already lost me
Hey Fauci, I’m ready for some dwarf tossing, how about you?
Dr. Fauxi should just STFU...
My “easing in” intent would be very defined - open up restaurants and retail stores, no ball games, for 3-4 weeks, then take a look at the data and decide if it’d be appropriate to begin larger gatherings.
My issue is that there’s still variables we don’t know and the only example of letting everything be ‘normal’ (ignoring the problem entirely) is Wuhan. So having a couple of defined steps is prudent imo. We’ve all gone through this pain and there’s a real possibility of wasting it. So let’s put one foot in to test the water before just diving in.
Apologies if I sounded accusatory. My snarfy remark was not directed at you. It was directed at “Dr.” Fauci and his goal of guaranteed safety. I would much rather have somebody like you on the Task Force than that guy.
Bravo.
We are ready, however, for Dr. FauXi to move to China.
No offense taken - np.
Can you imagine if we had President Biden? “...listen to the doctors, do what they tell you.” - yeah, he thinks that is ‘leadership’...pretty sure PDJT has his gears turning every time Fauci opens his mouth.
