I had an idea on how to create a coronavirus vaccine. I am only a layperson but the idea may have merit. The focus of vaccine research has been how to deal with the spike proteins or the "crown" on the coronavirus. These spike proteins provide a pathway for the coronavirus into cells. A vaccine would purportedly initiate an immune response to these proteins.
My idea is to modify the coronavirus and make it harmless by removing these spike proteins. Once introduced into the body this spikeless coronavirus should initiate an immune response and thus immunity to the real Covid-19. The researchers in Wuhan likely reverse engineered these spikes onto the coronavirus so that it could enter human cells so it can be done.
In fact, if the Chinese wanted to quell some of the storm coming at them, they could share how they did it. I really don't expect it but it would be a good first step.

You never know what idea might just happen. And thoughts happen just like yours that matter. That’s fairly close to how a doctor thought up the quinine and zinc therapy. Someone thinking outta the box a little.
Who knows, maybe the right person will see your idea and add their smarts to it.
All coronaviruses have spikes, including the common cold. In centuries of attempts, someone would already have thought of de-spiking the cold virus. Evidently that wasn’t successful.
May...maybe, could, perhaps, if...never mind.

Damnit Jim, I’m a doctor, not a printer...
The smallest surgery I could ever manage was a 1 mm Rat Femoral Vein Anastomosis at 40 powers and using 10-0 suture. I have this vision of somebody with forceps and VERY small scissors “shaving” a virus.
I had a similar idea with cars. If we remove the bumpers, people will go slower resulting in less accidents.
