The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a major turbulence across the planet. Several theories and assumptions on prevention and cure have kept the social media busy. As thousands of lives have fought hard and lost, here’s a sunshine “recovery” story of a senior couple – 92 years old Dr. Ananda Prasad and his wife Aryabala – both of whom were COVID-19 positive but have since recovered using a treatment approach with Zinc.

According to Dr. Prasad, Zinc has been his area of research for several years and could certainly be looked at, as a potential solution, for any research efforts to effectively treat COVID-19 patients. A combination of zinc and hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug that is being studied as a treatment for the coronavirus, have been tested with 1,000 people in Los Angeles with great results. He believes that a couple of local hospitals have launched research on it and are recruiting people. In common terms, Dr. Prasad attributed Zinc to kill the virus from the outside, while hydroxychloroquine would draw the virus into the cell and cleanse it. Zinc inhibits the enzyme required for the virus to sustain. More importantly, Zinc is non-toxic and could be taken as a preventive supplement for the general population (if we are looking at 10-15 days). However, the combination with hydroxychloroquine should be taken only under the guidance of a physician. This solution might not work for individuals with underlying heart, liver and kidney conditions.

Dr. Prasad stated that Zinc has always had the attribute of killing viruses. Outside of the therapeutic benefit of mixing hydroxychloroquine and zinc as COVID-19 treatment, preventive benefits vary. Asked whether enough zinc in the body will prevent any infections, Dr. Prasad responded that this question cannot be answered at this point. However, earlier studies have shown that zinc deficient individuals when given Zinc of 50mg dosage a day, the incidence of infection declined by 66% - but these infections were urinary tract infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, cold etc. The presumption is that if you are zinc sufficient you hopefully would be able to prevent it, but not 100%. High doses of Zinc 50g or 75 g a day- which usually is used to treat sickle cell patients to prevent sickling, in those cases we might have to add 1mg of copper as they become copper deficient.

According to Dr. Prasad, Zinc has therapeutic and preventive benefits. He published the first study in the world over two decades ago. Dr. Prasad believes that a combination of zinc and hydroxychloroquine is the answer right now. Well, it helped him and his wife get cured.
