3 Bay Area counties share data in report published by CDC

Americans’ addiction to greasy junk food and heaping meal portions, disparities in access to healthy food and sitting for hours on end have made us especially vulnerable to COVID-19.

The United States has more obese people — about 40 percent of the overall population — than any other major nation, and obesity has been linked to chronic, preventable illnesses such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Any of those conditions can lead to a more severe outcome of COVID-19.

A recent analysis of hospital network data found that 48 percent of patients being treated for the disease were obese.

The COVID-NET report, published on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, looked at 1,482 patients in 99 counties nationwide, including Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties in California. The data were collected between March 1 and March 31.

The data showed that 9 of 10 patients had an underlying medical condition, including:

Do you have room in your living room to do exercising and stream exercise programs?

Do you have hand weights?

Do you have a backyard?

Just a few ideas to keep you working out :-)

Same here.

We see more people walking down our main road, than ever before.

Same in my sister’s neighborhood...we dropped something off on her doorstep, the other day, and it looked like half the neighborhood was out.

Yes, specific #'s.

To see if the obesity is always a negative or only from particular value. But it does not look like anyone is collecting the data.

Still, the correlation with COVID is obvious:

Obese people have more health issues. How is this even remotely surprising?

The media are afraid to look at race differences so they are focusing on obesity.

Since Italy was hit so hard, and France, and Iran, and China. Are they also obese?

It says 40% of those in the study were obese and 48% of those with COVID were obese. Does that indicate obesity is a factor?

If one is overweight by 20% or more above their ideal body weight, that’s considered obese.

Morbidly obese is being 100 lbs or more overweight. Statistically, one lives 10 years less than a person that’s not overweight.

A height weight chart does not take into consideration a persons build, nor the percentage of body fat being carried on one’s frame.

I’m 5’ 11” in height. I would describe my build as a middle linebacker type physique.

In the Army, I was sent to a leadership school. I was weighed and they said I was overweight and dismissed from the school. I think I weighed 203 lbs, and could only weigh 198 lbs.

I went to a doctor and he performed a pinch test at the waist line with a pair of calipers. I had 14% body fat, per the test. Based on my age, I could have 21% body fat. I think they increased my weight limit to something like 218-221 lbs.

I was never sent back to the school, but I did take a PT test and ran 2 miles in 10:35.

I HATED the Military’s arbitrary height weight charts because they never took a person’s build under consideration.

I joined the US Air Force- IL Air National Guard, and was always on their fat man program because I was considered overweight.

I could outrun 95% percent of our unit, especially the high ranking skinny enlisted sergeants, because most of them smoked like chimneys.

42% of Americans are obese, proving that the death rate for CCP Virus is not particularly focused on the obese. 50% dead v. 42% of the population are obese. So?

“The prevalence of obesity was 42.4% in 2017~2018. [Read CDC National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) data brief]”

Blacks hardest hit!

“Non-Hispanic blacks (49.6%) had the highest age-adjusted prevalence of obesity, followed by Hispanics (44.8%), non-Hispanic whites (42.2%) and non-Hispanic Asians (17.4%).”

So 48% obese and 52% not obese... this is the same as a flip of the coin. Obesity plays no role and may even be slightly protective.

The BMI is a faulty method.....

Very good point. This was used when I was in the Army to kick out soldiers during RIF. Many were actual fat bodies but some could max the PT test with ease and hump a full combat load with no problem but they were BMIed anyway.

A funny side note is that this same type of faulty index is used for pets at the vet. My cat is very skinny and yet the vet tech said she was over weight.

The BMI is a faulty method to determine obesity. Body type and lean muscle mass must be applied to it. I am 5’11” endo-meso with a good deal of lean muscle. I am considered 20lbs overweight at 185. I assure you I am not, with a 32” waist. So I would take this report and study with a grain of salt.

Yes and no for BMI as a measurement. Elderly for example may fall in the normal range, but be insulin resistant as well as sarcopenic. That being said, Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is a better predictor. The most accurate measurements of insulin resistance are HbA1c and Kraft glucose tests. Kraft was the pathologist that proved pre-diabetes was diabetes.

Waist to height ratio is a far better predictor of insulin resistance and degree of adiposity.

Association of Waist-Height Ratio with Diabetes Risk: A 4-Year Longitudinal Retrospective Study

There are numerous studies available on this. Best to be under .50.

Finally, frame size is important for BMI. An easy method to determine it is to wrap your thumb and index finger around your apposing wrist. If they do not touch, that is an indication of large frame. If they touch, that is average and is suppose to match the BMI index. If they cross, that is a small frame and BMI should be adjusted accordingly.

I don't like BMI, however it is a rapid indicator for further testing.

The media are afraid to look at race differences so they are focusing on obesity.

You are right, they are afraid to look at anything racial.

But obesity is in all races. White, black, brown. And the Asians that eat like Americans, they're getting fat too.

That's the line between normal and overweight. To get to obese you would have to hit:

5'10"=210 lbs.
5'7"=192 lbs.

I’m obese too, supposedly. I have a bit of a gut, but because I am well built, and have muscles; I am supposedly obese. It’s a joke what is called obese.

How fat does a guy have to be before he’s officially “obese”?

Actually, barely fat at all. I'm in decent shape, bit of belly fat but that's it. I'm only 10-15lbs away from being 'obese', though my weight tends to fluctuate about that much so I've probably been 'obese' a couple times. And I had no problem pulling a ~75lb ruck and a 27lb machine gun through the Ft Polk swamp for several miles. To be considered normal weight, I'd have to lose 20-25 lbs and look like a stick.
