Shedding some light upon this, however, is Sophos which explains:
[I]n some cases, use-after-free bugs can allow an attacker to change the flow of control inside your program, including diverting the CPU to run untrusted code that the attacker just poked into memory from outside, thereby sidestepping any of the browsers usual security checks or are you sure dialogs. Thats the most serious sort of exploit, known in the jargon as RCE, short for remote code execution, which means just what it says - that a crook can run code on your computer remotely, without warning, even if theyre on the other side of the world.
If Sophos is right, it makes a lot of sense that Google would consider the exploit serious enough that it wants the details kept secret from potential hackers before most Chrome users have upgraded and are safe.
Chrome 81.0.4044.113 is rolling out for Windows, Mac and Linux right now. You can check your version of Chrome by clicking the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the browser then navigating to Help > About. As long as you are running this version (or above if you are reading this post at a later date) you are safe. If not, you must update urgently - something Chrome should prompt you to do on its About page.

I found all three of these while looking for installation instructions for Chrome browsers on Raspberry Pi 4. Yowsah.

Ouch.
Thanks.

It actually kicked off the update without prompting me. Thanks for the info.
Software engineers who understand what’s inside will tell you: Chrome is shit.
Thanks!
I’m hating google more and more every month.
Unfortunately, firefox has turned to crap and IE is ridiculously antiquated.
I’ve been using Brave a little more, but mostly to get past the “free read” limits and ad-blocker blockers that some news sites have. I have Brave set to delete all history and cookies each time I close it, so if there is a story I want to read for example at the NYT or WP etc I paste the URL into Brave and they can’t track it. Brave is pretty streamlined too - loads pages quickly.

It’s all $hit, just some $hit is less trustworthy than others
Is that why Microsoft chose to base Edge on Chrome?
I just updated, so thanks to the OP for the heads up!
Can they finally fix some of the memory leaks, while they are at it? I use Brave as much as possible, but some financial sites I have to use Chrome.
But the pressing question is, how can the Left blame the President for this? Failing to recognize the infection early enough? Failing to quarantine users? Being discriminatory for opposing open borders and instead building a (fire) wall?
I use about 6 browsers, mainly Firefox ESR with multiple profiles and and Waterfox classic and Basilisk since I want multiple tab rows. But also Firefox Quantum portable and Chrome portable for pages that that do not work well on the others. Edge is always there too, but it a poorer recourse. Thank God for such tools and options.

yup
I have to use the whole Google suite for work, and I despise it.
It seems like a 3/4 baked suite of software, full of buggy little things. I admit, I do like Google Meet as a drop dead simple way of having a video conference, but even that is limited for an IT person since you can’t control someone else’s screen.
I dislike Google Apps. You can’t copy stuff out of a spreadsheet and paste it into Gmail. You have to paste it into sheets, copy it out from sheets, and paste into Gmail. Then, if the cells don’t paste right, you can’t edit them there, you have to delete it, go back into Sheets, reformat, cross your fingers and paste back in Gmail.
Google Drive would be a good thing, but it has so many quirks I rarely use it. Such as, you can’t open and edit a non-Google App document (such as a Word or Excel document) from the drive. You have to download it, edit it, and re-upload it.
I really hate everything about it except Google Meet.
Thanks to SunkenCiv for the ping!
Save to read again.
My kid uses a school supplied chrome book. Is that at risk? I dont think I have any upgrade abilities on it.
Chrome (the OS in this case) probably checks for updates available each time it starts up., but there should be a method to check for updates. Assuming the school hasn’t disabled that, should be good. Also, is it likely that there is financial information on your kid’s computer?
