Learn about Shi Zhengli and Wuhan Institute of Virology She is a Chinese virologist who came to international prominence as "bat woman" during the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic for her work on bat viruses.
Shi is a researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Shi and colleague Cui Jie found the SARS virus originated in bats.
Shi is a member of the Virology Committee of the Chinese Society for Microbiology.

Recently, Prof. Zhengli Shi and Xingyi Ge from WIV, in cooperation with researchers from University of North Carolina, Harvard Medical School, Bellinzona Institute of Microbiology and etc, examine the disease potential of a SARS-like virus, SHC014-CoV, which is currently circulating in Chinese horseshoe bat populations.
Using the SARS-CoV reverse genetics system, the scientists generated and characterized a chimeric virus expressing the spike of bat coronavirus SHC014 in a mouse-adapted SARS-CoV backbone. The results indicate that group 2b viruses encoding the SHC014 spike in a wild-type backbone can efficiently use multiple orthologs of the SARS receptor human angiotensin converting enzyme II (ACE2), replicate efficiently in primary human airway cells and achieve in vitro titers equivalent to epidemic strains of SARS-CoV. Evaluation of available SARS-based immune-therapeutic and prophylactic modalities revealed poor efficacy; both monoclonal antibody and vaccine approaches failed to neutralize and protect from infection with CoVs using the novel spike protein.
On the basis of these findings, they synthetically re-derived an infectious full-length SHC014 recombinant virus and demonstrate robust viral replication both in vitro and in vivo. The work suggests a potential risk of SARS-CoV re-emergence from viruses currently circulating in bat populations.

It’s vaccine research. Vaccines are needed for SARS and MERS.
In other words you discovered that virus and vaccine research uses human cell cultures. That's been the case since the 1960s.

Nice link. So that’s a(nother) smoking gun that they were creating man-made “chimeras” of the corona virus, and the NIH was aware, if not funding. But this paper is talking about what was done in a US lab? And is not the same strain that is COVID-19, correct?
So was the overall process “offshored” to China like so many other things? Or did the Chinese go too far out on a limb on their own? There’s a lot of obfuscation going on, perhaps by many here in the US. Thanks again.

I agree with that.
I would bet our country-Russia-China-No. Korea -India-Iran etc. would be working on weaponizing viruses for warfare just like the weaponizing of nuclear devices is ongoing.
Before you use a virus biological weapon a vaccine and treatment has to be developed.
China had not reached that stage when the virus got loose.

UNC = University of North Carolina
I see now that it appears the work was being done in China, but were US organizations (such as UNC, NIH, Gates, etc) behind it being done in the first place? Are we just assuming the Chinese were solely responsible for this strain, at this point? I’m not trying to give China an out, but if others are to blame we need to know, all of it.
