WHY IS NEW YORK HARDEST HIT?
Powerline ^ | APRIL 14, 2020 | JOHN HINDERAKER

Posted on 04/14/2020 12:27:23 PM PDT by Hojczyk

As everyone knows, New York City is the main center of COVID-19 infection and fatality in the U.S., with something like 40% of all American deaths. The reasons why shouldn’t be a mystery.

When the Black Death struck Europe in the 14th Century, people had no idea what caused the disease, and all of their theories were wrong. But experience showed, as was the case in later plagues, that the countryside was safer than the city. Most people who could decamped from cities to the country.

And New York City, with more than 28,000 people per square mile, is by far the most densely populated major US city. San Francisco is second at around 18,500, and cities like Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington are in the 11,000 to 12,000 range.

There is a second factor that I suspect is also very important: New York’s reliance on mass transit. New York’s mass transit system–mostly its subways–is, by a huge margin, the most relied-upon public transportation system in the U.S. It carries a remarkable 2,275,000,000 riders per year.

Another point is worth mentioning. Why don’t we think of New York as a chronically sick place? Because people build up immunity to diseases that have been around for a while, and the more people you are exposed to, the more likely you are to be immune. But when a new disease like COVID-19 comes along, a virus to which no one has built up immunity, the population density and public transportation factors come to the fore and New York becomes a very sick city, compared to anywhere else.

"And it’s a dirty place."

"It is. When you walk down the street, you smell gas/diesel fumes and urine. When you go down into the subway, you smell gas/diesel fumes, and urine. The place is permeated with that odor.

Lack of societal discipline and respect for authority.

New York City Demographics

According to the most recent ACS, the racial composition of New York City was:

White: 42.67%

Black or African American: 24.27%

Other race: 15.12%

Asian: 13.95%

Two or more races: 3.51%

Native American: 0.43%

Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander: 0.05%

As many as 800 languages are spoken throughout New York City, making it the most diverse city in the world when it comes to linguistic multiplicity.

Cute, I like the reference but I think the sneezing part should be changed to coughing. Sneezers have allergies, not CoVid 19.

Maybe New York got a lot of ‘first spread’ hits.

Seems the second person who gets the disease gets a watered down version.

If this was a military weapon (no one knows) the logical places to spread first wave toxins would be New York (financial center), Chicago (transportation center),California (tech centers) Atlanta etc (travel hub centers) and last but not least Washington (Government center)...

Will fall bring a second punch? Will the free world choose to wipe the map clean? Only time will tell.

I’ve lived in Crown Heights on and off many times.

It’s a dump.

No. On March 1 we were entertaining family from a small missouri town who had never been to NYS before. Fir a week they had visited upstate, long island and finally on march 1 long awaited Manhattan. They lived it. Noted how clean, gorgeous achitecture, Times Sq, Central Park. Favorite part if trip.

CuCuomo didn’t shut down schools/parks/etc soon enough.

Other high density areas (like HK, Singapore) did.

It’s because NYC is the best at everything.

Just ask a New Yorker.

The rest of the country is just fly over country.

Winters are hard, not a lot of places to exercise. Obesity and diabetes make you particularly vulnerable to COVID-19. Also, NYC being very multicultural means that you have a tough time getting everyone to agree on preventative measures. (In addition to what everyone else said about public transport and population density)

“WHY IS NEW YORK HARDEST HIT?”

Not enough healthy skeptical xenophobia to keep the CCP from spreading it to their international airport hubs.

Elevators too. Nearly everyone has to pile into crowded elevators to get to their office or apartment.
