As everyone knows, New York City is the main center of COVID-19 infection and fatality in the U.S., with something like 40% of all American deaths. The reasons why shouldnt be a mystery.
When the Black Death struck Europe in the 14th Century, people had no idea what caused the disease, and all of their theories were wrong. But experience showed, as was the case in later plagues, that the countryside was safer than the city. Most people who could decamped from cities to the country.
And New York City, with more than 28,000 people per square mile, is by far the most densely populated major US city. San Francisco is second at around 18,500, and cities like Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington are in the 11,000 to 12,000 range.
There is a second factor that I suspect is also very important: New Yorks reliance on mass transit. New Yorks mass transit systemmostly its subwaysis, by a huge margin, the most relied-upon public transportation system in the U.S. It carries a remarkable 2,275,000,000 riders per year.
Another point is worth mentioning. Why dont we think of New York as a chronically sick place? Because people build up immunity to diseases that have been around for a while, and the more people you are exposed to, the more likely you are to be immune. But when a new disease like COVID-19 comes along, a virus to which no one has built up immunity, the population density and public transportation factors come to the fore and New York becomes a very sick city, compared to anywhere else.

New York’s subway is the filthiest place in America, filthier than the streets of San Francisco filled with poop.
You are probably not talking about Jakarta, Manila, or any city in India being very clean are you? Seoul, Tokyo, and Singapore are exceptions in terms of clean cities in Asia, not the rule.
its a democrat hellhole?
I watched an interview with a mass transit worker in NYC. He summed it up. “New Yorker’s don’t like being told what to do”.
Also, International Airport+China Town.
Lousy leadership. Cuomo and de Blasio were still engaged in happy talk in March urging people to ride the subway, go to Broadway shows, bars, and restaurants.
Why is Detroit hardest hit in Michigan?
“Because they have sinned mightily before the Lord and are an abomination to him. Hows that?”
That pretty well sums it up.
Seoul has twice the density as NYC.
I’d guess it’s the most dense population town in the state, plus high percentage of black people with obesity and diabetes. Perhaps others closer to the scene can comment?
Leadership worse than in Puerto Rico?
The Feds need to shut down some of New York’s hospitals which are worse than some in third world countries according to some.
Singapore has one of the best and most affordable public transport systems compared with 24 major cities around the world, according to a June report by consulting firm McKinsey.
The report - Elements of success: Urban transportation systems of 24 global cities - assessed the transport systems of 24 cities using more than 80 indicators over five main dimensions: Availability, affordability, efficiency, convenience and sustainability.
Only Hong Kong got a higher ranking.
I am pretty certain that I was exposed to this Chinese virus. Never did exhibit any symptoms but there's no way I could have avoided it. I was taking crowded Metro North trains and subways the whole time. Obviously I'm blessed with good overall health and almost never get sick. I exercise, eat well, and usually have enough alcohol in my system to kill all the germs!
28,000 persons on 640 acres?
That is almost 1000 sq feet per person.
For comparison, Phoenix has 3120 ppl per sq mile and Arizona, in general, has 65 ppl per sq mile. We also have about 3700 cases of CV-19 with 122 deaths as of 4/13/2020. Another reason to love AZ!
Turning New York around wont be because Cuomo is any sort of genius. I think hes a bit of a ham-handed thug. You can bet, though, that Cuomo will try to advance his career on work that is very likely to be done by the administration and by more sensible people.
The powers that be in NYC arent concerned with actual human deaths, just the optics. They wanted the doctors to put patients on ventilators so they could say, see, we need more, weve run out of ventilators. The problem with that is that early treatment with HCQ means they wont need those ventilators, and 80% of the people on ventilators died. So their plan backfired. Theyve killed more people and want to pass the buck to Trump.
Can someone tell me why the entire state of New York has only 718 ICU beds available for a population of 19.5 million, while the state I live in, Indiana, has only 12 fewer ICU beds available, for a population of 6.7 million? This boggles my mind. I took those bed numbers right off the IHME CoVid 19 website.
Then why was San Francisco so lightly hit?
“But that wouldn’t explain why SF got off so lightly. “
That comes under ‘earthquakes in divers places’.
