Trump to speak with sports commissioners today
NBC Sports ^ | 4/04/20 | Michael David Smith

When will it be safe for sports to start back up again? That’s something many millions of fans want to know, and it will be addressed as part of President Trump’s agenda today.

A call with the commissioners of the professional sports leagues has been scheduled for today. The noon entry on Saturday’s official White House schedule says, “The President participates in a phone call with Major League Commissioners.”

The entry does not say which commissioners will be on the call, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would presumably take part.

So far the NFL has been the least-affected of America’s pro sports by the coronavirus pandemic, simply because the nationwide shutdown is taking place during the NFL’s offseason. But NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills acknowledged this week that the NFL regular season may not be able to go on as planned.

Realistically, America probably still has a significant wait before team sports can be played, for the simple reason that Dr. Sills noted this week: The current protocols say that if one person tests positive, everyone who has been in contact with that one person should self-isolate. And that means it would only take one player, coach or other team personnel to test positive for an entire team - and any teams that have recently played against that team ' to have to go into isolation. It’s just not feasible for a sports league to re-start its schedule right now, knowing that at any moment one person’s positive test would require whole teams to stop playing and practicing.

Good point, they’re going to have to do something like that for everything opening back up. The fear of lawsuits is one of the biggest obstacles (or will be) to prevent things from opening that no one is talking about.

I’m also pretty sure it’s the TV networks driving this. They are losing their shirts with all these cancellations.

>>what prompted all the hysteria and panic was when these sports leagues began canceling their events in March.

who convinced them to take this path?

who convinced the schools to close?

who convinced sxsw to cancel?

considering the number of infected celebrities today why did the awards shows go on as normal?

this was going to be no worse than a very bad flu season?

I am one who has been very critical of the msm and dems generating as much panic as possible over the coronavirus. But the numbers in NY and New Jersey do warrant drastic actions. Trump has inherited a globalization mess and the only fix is a hard reset, which we are seeing now.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch. I wonder what the contract says about partial or complete season cancellation. Do the networks have to pay the leagues and do the leagues have to pay the players? I know I still have to pay for ESPN on my cable bill.

"He may even recognize something I’ve said for weeks: His initial instincts on this were correct, and this was going to be no worse than a very bad flu season ... and what prompted all the hysteria and panic was when these sports leagues began canceling their events in March."

I totally agree and I have the same perception of the chain of events. I will be even more specific in laying blame on the NBA. When the NBA cancelled it's season it set off a chain reaction that immediately pressured the NHL then the MLB into cancelling everything and this started the nation wide unhinged panic of the cancel culture that has shut down the entire country.

It's also kinda ironic that I state it was the NBA that started the panic and it's the NBA that has been in bed with Communist China for a long time.

I believe the sports leagues were all set to carry on their events with no spectators. What changed this was the first case where the NBA player tested positive for COVID-19. Once that happened, all bets were off.

See my last post. I really wouldn’t “blame” the NBA in this case. Once they got to a point where they had to face the prospect of PLAYERS infecting each other, they really had no alternative but to cancel the games.

Is it just a coincidence that the word "pandemic" is made up of the word "PANIC" with "DEM" in the middle? Nah...

I don’t disagree with you, but let’s be brutally honest here: the situation in NY/NJ is entirely self-inflicted. Case in point ... The NYC subway system is still operating TODAY.

Simple solution to all this mess -- everyone plays in HAZMAT suits.

Sports betting isn’t legal yet in every state but no state prohibits wagering on an account such as TVG to my knowledge.

Agree, blame might be a little strong but it sure seemed it was the cancelling of the NBA season that started the chain reaction.

I’ve tried. Once a prohibited state is placed in the address box during signup, all kinds of nasty things happen. No go for me. A few years back, while visiting Las Vegas, folks were pimping a device on which you could place bets on multiple events. It stops working at the state line - GPS controlled. Kinda slick.

I also just heard that some horse tracks are caving in to panic. This sucks.
