Why I fear the toxic legacy of teaching children at home: Leading educationalist ANTHONY SELDON has a stark warning about the unchartered waters of home-schooling (HaHa)

There are many drastic changes being made to our lives as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

But what few people appreciate is that Britain has embarked on one of the greatest educational and social experiments in our history.

In any normal year, schools would reconvene in two weeks' time after the Easter holidays for the summer term. Not this year.

Millions of children of school age, with the exception of those who are considered vulnerable or whose parents are in key jobs, will have to adjust to working from home for as long as six months.

It is an eventuality for which we have had next to no time to prepare, the risks are beyond the imagination, and of all the toxic legacies bequeathed by this coronavirus crisis this one may prove to be the most devastating.

All of these men were homeschooled.

Is it any wonder that they are systematically being removed from our schools?

The Federal Government subsudizes the states on a per seat attendance.... If kids don’t return for the next school year.... Oh yea.

The Readers' Comments are priceless, as usual, e.g.:

"The toxic legacy I most fear is the leftist woke agenda that has brainwashed and indoctrinated children and controlled the educational system for years. It's a relief that children will have a respite from this toxic leftist agenda, and get to spend time with their parents, and try other learning methods. Educationalists are afraid of losing their power to control and indoctrinate children. They're afraid that - through the Coronavirus epidemic - we might find out that homeschooling and distance learning are actually superior to the brainwashing institutions that many schools and colleges have become."

Another Reader's Comment:

"London, United Kingdom, 6 hours ago

"He's just sad the kids aren't getting their daily dose of cultural Marxist brainwashing. No global warming propaganda etc."

unchartered waters of home-schooling (HaHa)

The uncharted part is the teachers don’t get a paycheck.

I was homeschooled in PA, a sane place in most respects but irrational about homeschooling.
Among other things they’re picky about who may teach. I’d be threatened with prosecution if I tried to teach the neighbor’s kids, because I’m not certified. Their parents would be threatened as well.
Due to the pandemic, I’ve got a lot of time on my hands and would love to tutor youngsters while the schools are shut down. But we’d be breaking the law.
My only defense would be that I’d be providing the “socialization” that anti-homeschoolers are constantly citing when they criticize homeschooling.

I will almost guarantee that teachers laid off due to the virus are being paid.

It’s us schlubs who work for industry that get shafted.

The insanity of ‘No Child Left Behind’—one of many gifts Ted Kennedy left us. (G.W. Bush eagerly signed on to it to signal bipartisanship—but it was Kennedy’s). For those who don’t know it worked like this: Goals were to be set for proficiency in reading, math, science, etc. States had to design tests to show the goals being met.

At first, the % of students required to be ‘proficient’ were low, but they increased every year. After 10 or 12 years 100% had to test ‘proficient’. Students were broken into categories: low income, free/reduced lunch, non-English speaking, black, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Native American/Aleut, special education, etc. If any of these sub groups failed to meet goal, the school was listed as failing. Any district with a failing school was listed as failing as well.

Anyone (except a liberal) can see the absurdity. By definition 50% are at or below average. Schools and states responded pretty much three ways. Teach exclusively to the test. Make the test easier to pass, and cheat. No Child Left Behind was abandoned when the required ‘proficiency’ rate was at 75% or so.
