Guess What's Flying Off Shelves Now: Hair Dye Twitter
NPR ^ | March 27, 2020 | Camila Domonoske

America is stocking up on food, thermometers — and hair dye.

The latest sales data from Nielsen shows how our lives have been affected by widespread social distancing and, in some areas, mandatory lockdowns, as the world tries to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Just as in recent weeks, sales of medical supplies, cleaning products, paper goods and shelf-stable food have been remarkably high. But last week, customers also flocked to beauty products — salons are closed, after all.

Yeast saw a big spike as we launched new baking projects. And in the meat department, hefty spiral hams have newfound popularity.

Here's some of Nielsen's data on what Americans were buying.

Yeah, I go months between dye jobs, which I already do at home. I don’t do that all-in-one crap, either.

Good thing peeps can’t really stock up on $1.299 gas.

If Summer Diesel is available from the gas station tanks now, I may go buy two month’s worth.

Well hair dye is not on my shopping list ever.

By some lucky stroke of genetics, in spite of the other health issues I have, my hair color has virtually not changed since my 20’s.

I have a LITTLE bit of gray but since I am so light anyways, it really doesn’t show.

Thank God for small favors.

You can't buy yeast in DC for love or money, and people are complaining. I guess folks haven't heard of sourdough. You can easily make your own starter because yeast is everywhere.

I don’t care about or need hair dye, but I do need a haircut. The place I get my hair cut has been closed for several weeks and the lady who usually cuts my hair says she doesn’t know when they’ll be re-opening.

I was just thinking of this. My 3/31 hair appointment was canceled and I suspect the new one in a week will be also. Time to shop for a similar hair color. If it takes awhile to get back to a salon schedule, so be it.

Good grief, all I’ve ever done for the last several years is put a 1/2” shoe in the clippers and run it back and forth over my head. I’m good.

How do you die your hair?

Of course! We older ladies still have to look good & having the Pepe LePew skunk stripe down the middle of our greying hair doesn’t help our self-esteem any even if there’s no where we can go right now & nobody we can impress.

Suppose Mr. Right comes knocking at my door? Still need to look good! LOL! I was noticing my own stripe this morning, grateful for the boxes in my linen closet since I can’t go to the hairdresser yet!

As for the ham - did anyone notice this is Easter season? Guess what people eat for Easter: Ham, Lamb or Turkey.

Makes sense!

Yeah well, when other people were freaking out over toilet paper, I was quietly stocking up on yeast and baking powder (already have lots of flour), as well as booze and especially cocktail bitters. If I’m gonna go down, it’s gonna be with a martini in my hand.

When this is over we are going to be ONE UGLY group of survivors. Home dye jobs, bowl haircuts, fallen Botox lifts, yellow teeth, 30 lbs. of extra weight, and albino white. I can’t wait to see Hollywood emerge.

Of course I am kidding about all of this EXCEPT the part about Hollywood. I hope they look as hideous on the outside as they are on the inside. Oh, and democrats too.

I was smart enough to get my hair cut, and the oil changed in my vehicle just before everything shut down. The oil change means the most to me since my job is considered essential, and I do plenty of driving. I have no idea if the garage I go to closed down.

That really irritates me. I went grey early (took after my father). My mum passed away at the age of 66 while I was in my early 30s.

She took some perverse pleasure in how it ticked me off to see she had more dark hair than me. I can still see her smiling about it in her bed.

Thanks for spurring the warm memory.
