Survivalists have been prepping for a disaster scenario like coronavirus. Now, many feel vindicated

RINGTOWN, Pa. - When Dan Wowak went to live alone in the wilds of Patagonia in 2016 for a chance to win a half-million dollars on reality television, he was allowed to bring 10 items. Toilet paper wasn't one of them.

Wowak, a Mahanoy City native, did bring an ax and saw, a sleeping bag and a ferro rod, which you can strike to make sparks in just about any condition. He also chose fishing line and hooks, which proved invaluable. Over 51 days, he ate nothing but fish he caught in a lake: nine of them.

"I lost 54 pounds," he said. "I know what hunger feels like."

Wowak, who worked in the juvenile justice system before becoming a full-time woodsman, left the reality show "Alone" early, choosing sanity, food and his family over the big prize. Today, at age 38, he teaches survival and outdoors classes through his company, Coal Cracker Bushcraft, giving crash courses in how to stay alive in the woods or when goods are scarce. He said he's recently gotten hundreds of emails expressing interest as America quickly went from normal to empty supermarket shelves. He's seen people making smart decisions, like social distancing, and bizarre ones, like grabbing all the toilet paper they can.

I prefer the term “insurer”.

I buy car insurance even thought I haven’t had an accident in 45 years. I buy home insurance even though I’ve never had a house fire. I buy life insurance for the myself so the Mrs and kids are ok, but haven’t used it yet.

Storing some food, having a way to get water, an alternate means of heat, medical supplies and a way to defend your family is just another form of insurance. A little more direct than writing a check to some company, but the same idea.

I haven’t broken into the MRE’s yet.
= = =

Mine are for the Y2K catastrophe.

Hmmmm. Are we now in the Y2K2X catastrophe?

Hope they aged, like fine wine.

I had to look up thermal scopes. Hubby is the gun person and I know he has at least one. I am, however, quite capable of loading and firing. I even have a pink cammo 22 rifle that he gave me one Christmas.

I bought quite a few Mountain House meals when Walmart cleared them out. I noticed they have a “best by” of something like 20 years.

I imagine MREs would still be good a long time past their best by date if they were stored properly.

I noticed that my neighbor Steve brought out an Urban Combat Vehicle.

I blasted it, just to be sure. He probably wants my toilet paper.

See if John Deere covers that under warranty, Steve!

The fish sammich is meh but I need the tarter sauce for tater dippin’. I’ve tried making it, buying many brands, but none live up to McD’s. I wish they would sell it in the stores.

“It’s a social media generated disaster.”

Exactly. Our store shelves are full except for a few things picked clean by social media and Big Dem Media hysteria - TP, hand sanitizer, paper towels, and liquid hand soap. Virtually everything else is in abundance with occasional shortages that get fixed overnight.

God Bless our farmers, truckers, ag equipment companies, fertilizer companies, food manufacturers, warehouse workers, and grocery store stockers and checkers.

A year or so ago my husband opened a C-Ration can that he saved from ‘71. I doubt it was all that fresh in ‘71. The chocolate in it was still edible but not too tasty. It may have never been tasty, though. We also opened a Short Timer Boot Jim Beam Decanter. It was smooth as silk.

"Sweet pickle relish, a -tiny- bit of onion,, and miracle whip. Stir together...."

What? You don't have some Taco Bell hot suace in your butter compartment? Oh, that's a tartar sauce recipe...
It sounded like my average dinner in college.

"... prepping for a disaster scenario like coronavirus. Now, many feel vindicated"

What a crock!

Has electrical power been shut down?
Has the water supply been contaminated?
Is there rioting and antifa-type destruction everywhere?
Has food production stopped?
Have all medical facilities been destroyed?
Has the oil supply been eliminated?
Have all abortions stopped?
Has the virus death rate approached that of the Black Plague?
Are children dying or becoming paralyzed by polio?

Jason Nark is an a_hole POS helping to set up the scenario for everything to be Trump's fault come next November...

Sweet pickle relish, a -tiny- bit of onion,, and miracle whip — maybe add some tuna?

Miracle Whip? Eewww. Mom used to slather that on all of our bologna sandwiches.

I remember him from “Alone”. Love that show! Ironic, I’m watching YouTube’s Brooke Whipple right now from the same series. Her videos are very calming to watch for anyone interested. Almost 1st thing she said in this one is she’s going camping overnight to get away from the virus news...lol

I prepped for Y2K, but I prepped differently than most people. I look for barter items and for Y2K I stocked up on coffee and bourbon, because you can trade coffee and bourbon for anything. Since Y2K I’ve been in around hurricane territory for two decades and I keep stuff around. But I’m not raising chickens, and I don’t have hundreds and hundreds of thousands of rounds, I don’t buy cheese wheels, but yes it’s easy to be prepared for the short-term and much harder for the long-term.
If you’re going to do it right you live on a self-sustaining piece of property and you practice self-sustaining farming and storage of the products that you grow. Then you also keep a rooster around cuz you ain’t going to have chickens laying eggs much more than 3 or 4 years per and you need a constant cycle. Very few peppers have cyclic methods of sustainability they just buy a lot and store a lot. Well folks, not everybody has the fiscal ability to do that.

Real preppers don't play fair with food. Use a throw net instead of line and hooks.

Ingredients
1/2 cup mayonnaise
3 1/2 tablespoons dill pickle relish, divided
1 1/2 teaspoons capers

2 tablespoons chopped onion, divided
1/2 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
1/2 teaspoon white sugar

Blend mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons relish, capers, 1 tablespoon chopped onion, parsley, and sugar in a blender until smooth. Blend remaining relish and onion into the blended mixture.
Transfer sauce to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving.

I bought quite a few Mountain House meals when Walmart cleared them out. I noticed they have a “best by” of something like 20 years.

That they do. I deliberately kept one of my favorites, Seafood Chowder, way past its Best By date, and it was absolutely delicious. Then I found out they'd discontinued the packaged ones and I couldn't replace it. Then I found out it was available in #10 cans. Got one on my emergency shelves.

Some stuff, though, just doesn't keep that long. My Dad had a bottle of scotch that was 30 years old. I told him he might as well pour it down the terlit, nothing lasts that long. He looked at me like I was stupid...

What exactly is the “vindication”?

Because while the rest of the country was out panic shopping and scrambling for necessities, we were sitting back knowing we were not out there contributing to the problem.

Instead it was off to the local gun store for more ammo.
