As I watched the Prime Minister order mass house arrest on Monday night, I felt revulsion, anger and grief as anyone brought up when this was a free and well-governed country would. I also felt terribly alone. You could not have known, from anything broadcast that night or printed the following day, that anyone was unhappy with these events. But they were. So, above all things this week, I would like to thank all the kind, perplexed people who have got in touch with me by so many means, to say they share my doubts about the Governments handling of Covid-19. There are, in fact, many of us. If you feel this way, you are nothing like as solitary as you think. Next, I would like to thank all those who disagree with me, who choose to abuse me, often with lies, personal smears and swearwords. Your childish, intolerant reaction has strengthened me in my conviction that mine is the better case. If your policy is so good, why can you not defend it like civilised adults? Do you really think that I regret needless deaths any less than you? Can you not accept that I also have good motives? I now suspect this dark season might get still worse before we see the clear, calm light of reason again. The greater the mistake we have made, the less willing we are to admit it or correct it. This is why I greatly fear worse developments in the coming few days. When I predicted roadblocks in my column two weeks ago, which I did, I did so out of an instinct that we were entering on the craziest period of our lives. And now there are such roadblocks, officious, embarrassing blots on our national reputation.

Hitchens may be correct.
Fine here are both together in one chart.

Then too we have governors denying “right to try” drugs under threat of criminal prosecution.

Hillarys tweets have been down right evil. She’s retweeted the New York Times model thats forecasting 1.2 million dead. Thats based on the UK model Dr Birx has been talking about, the one that got revised down by a factor of 25 this week! The NYT model and the covidactnow.org one are classic GIGO!
The global warming crowd has switched to join the economic shut down crowd on this.
Read what you just wrote boot licker.
i am an old submariner, most folks would go nuts in that environment, no sanctuary, no privacy, ever.
i tend to be a solitary guy, even i after a mission had a ritual of going far into the desert alone for a few days to get away from people.
that said, this isolation is killing me.
You think people in a time of crisis would pull together for the common cause. That there is a common good that transcends politics. I don’t see it with Pelosi and many in the media. Pelosi crammed hundreds of millions for the Kennedy Center and the next thing you hear is that they are firing musicians; she is saying that there will be an investigation that Trump didn’t act soon enough; Chuck Todd is asking if the president has blood on his hands; and on and on.
These people are unreasonable and impervious to facts. Not only that they will never see any good in Trump. Trump has experience a silent coup and four years of abuse from the left and yet, unlike England, there is no mass arrest. These perpetrators (more like perpetual traitors) walk around free of any consequences for their criminal actions. But there is a time when enough is enough and it has happened in the past when they use to arrest and hang traitors. That moment might come again... hopefully, the American public will vote Trump back in and the left, despite their bitter harangues and calls for impeachment again, will sink into the irrelevance of oblivion. And hopefully they will stay there. They are full of sound and fury signifying NOTHING.
I think right now people are giving government the benefit of doubt. But our patience will start to run out around Easter. I think we can open things up by then. Maybe allow churches open again but with 100 people maximum. No shaking hands. No hugs.
Panic. Panic over the panic. Panic over the panic over the panic.
It’s like a string of kindergartners in the hallway going, “Shhhhhhh!” at the top of their lungs.
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fretit only causes harm.”
I trust people like Trump and Boris, who have an innate love of freedom and English liberty to lay down extraordinary powers when they are no longer needed. Politicians on the left would have to have those powers prisec out of their hands once the crisis was over.
That’s a stupid suggestion. Why not broadcast the statistics for stubbed-toe as well?
We have freedom? When did that happen?
Gun control
censor ship
zoning/land use laws
property taxes
income taxes
Environmental regs
Zillions of victimless crimes
Tell me again when we had freedom?
Or do you mean, when they allowed us to freely roam around just as long as we didn’t do anything the government considers bad? Was that the “freedom” you were talking about?
This is the y2k that never happened.
Social distancing is a 1984 word.
What it really means is:
Shutdown of economy;
Millions of people jobless and isolated;
Citizens denied basic rights at the point of a gun;
But yeah go police state!
Are the restaurants by Capitol Hill shut down? Salons? Barbers? Gyms?
Or are they mission critical?
Some people are like that. That doesn't mean that their opinion is wrong, just that they don't know how to express themselves any better - or don't want to.
Washington DC should be the last place to re-open. It can do the most damage.
