Yesterday's thread here:

Unfortunately I only have 5 N95 masks to rotate: 2 @ my Mom’s, 90 minutes away, and 3 @ home. I “should” be able to keep trips to town down to 5-6 days apart, mainly for perishables like milk & fresh fruit, but stuff comes up. For example, I had to take a vehicle to a repair shop unexpectedly, in the middle of a “cycle”, so I could then make a run to Mom’s 2 days later.
I’ve been heating masks @ 165 deg F (the “warm” setting in our Oster toaster oven) for 20 minutes, but worry that might degrade the mask slightly each time. Someone here posted something to that effect (4% degradation / cycle), but I’m not sure if the degradation was from the heat or the usage.
Note, the Oster is supposed to go down to 150 deg. F, but I can’t find any actual way to do it. The lowest manual (scroll up or down) temperature setting seems to be 200 deg. F. “Warm” is a preset that doesn’t display, but my thermometer says it is 165 deg. F. It appears the defrost preset may run @ 160 deg. F — need to get my non-contact thermometer gun back out to check that.
Ah, thanks.
A link @ the link says reuse up to 50x ok.
This could really help hospitals a lot.
I’m guessing many nurses and doctors are lamenting that only weeks ago they were tossing their masks when they left each room. :(

“I am guessing that the experts said this virus was not airborne (even though the regular flu is) to avoid a panic on mask buying. Or - to avoid panic when masks were not available.”
Actually, I think they figured whatever applied to SARS, applies here. The masks weren’t a big thing at that point. It’s called being lazy and arrogant - that’s just what these SOBs are.
Might as well get a name brand from a reputable source:
No, I do NOT work for Menards. :-)
I put 100 in my cart as a trial, and it looked good. So they have at least a bit of stock.
I wonder why this took so long to, uh, surface. The study that established the efficacy of the process was completed & results published in Aug. 2016. Did FDA forget about it? Battelle just set it aside? This is EXACTLY the sort of thing we should have had waiting in the wings. :-(
Wow, just saw on TV that McCormick Place in Chicago is to be converted to a 3000 bed hospital. I’ve been in it many times - that place is huge! It looks like it will be intended for patients with non-life-threatening COVID-19 infections / symptoms.
KY has stiffened travel restrictions too.

While at the same time, ironically:
Yeah, all too real.
My wife’s older cousin (brought up my wife when wifey was a teen) had two neighbors, both doctors, husband and wife, who live about 300 ft. away from older cousin’s (and my wife’s former) home, both died from COVID-19, the lady on 3/28, the man today. Older cousin knew them and says they were very good people. She (cousin) has been crying about it this evening, and I’ve never known her to cry. She’s a devout person - type who seems like her faith can get her through anything with calm and poise — but this has rocked her.
Like me, she (cousin) is old enough to figure we’ll lose a few friends or family in this one... :-(
More on latest KY restrictions & guidance. Cases are still low in number, but not terribly low given modest population density.

“She (cousin) has been crying about it this evening, and Ive never known her to cry. Shes a devout person - type who seems like her faith can get her through anything with calm and poise but this has rocked her.”
Prayers for her. The past few years dealing with other stuff has sure made me wonder “Where the heck is God in all of this?”.
And now this virus, and all the ramifications (lost jobs, money, stress, separation, etc.) of it. And perhaps at some point, like your cousin - death of loved ones. :(
And where the heck is God? I don’t know exactly. But, I believe that He loves us. He doesn’t change. He rules over EVERYTHING - including this stupid virus. Not that he created it - but He allows it. And He can also use it to bring something good out of it.
That would be an interesting thread - what GOOD has this whole thing created?
One of my friends said it brought him closer to his family.
Although in some families - that might not be such a great thing!
My four rules of life, that I also taught my kids:
1) Life isn’t fair.
2) Nothing is easy.
3) It’s always something.
4) God is Sovereign.
Perhaps a pessimistic view, but life is hard, and I think they are good things to remember. That fourth rule just dawned on me a few years ago.
:)
I remember when this article first appeared. And like you, I drew the same initial conclusion ("Vitamin D can cause cancer in smokers and ex-smokers").
But read it more closely:
New research appearing online today in Clinical Chemistry, the journal of AACC, shows that decreased levels of vitamin D may predispose smokers to developing tobacco-related cancer.
Everything I've read indicates a proper level of Vitamin D in our body is necessary to prevent all sorts of ailments, including the prevention of cancers.
The article could have been written more clearly. Saving the link for future reference. Thanks for finding and posting it. It mislead me too, at the time.
Ok, I remember because a doctor advise my Stepfather not take it. I am ex-smoker, so those articles catch my attention real quick.
Yeah, this article caused a lot of confusion. I’m not sure why, because if you read it closely, it’s says the opposite of one’s initial read.
” FluBro deep in the throes of tinfoil conspiracy meltdown”
I know about that meltdown, they think this thread believe the death rate is going be high like 3 to 5 percent.
I think they miss the point if we take action like social distancing, setting up hospital response in advance; basically what President Trump is doing, the rate could be as low as 2% to .7%.
What gets me President Trump is out in front saying this is a real threat.
