Jimmy "The Toy Cannon" Wynn, a legendary Houston Astros outfielder known for having tremendous power at just 160 pounds, died Thursday. He was 78.
The 5-foot-9 slugger hit 20 homers five times and 30 homers twice during his time with the Astros.

He and Joe Morgan together were quite a baseball show! RIP man.
There goes another one. :(
Condolences to family and friends of Jimmy Wynn. R.I.P., sir. Thanks.
I liked Wynn’s nickname - and the ‘Stros’ orange accented unis he’s modeling in that baseball card. RIP Jimmy. Tell Don Wilson (2 no-nos, later committed suicide) we said hi.
I enjoyed watching him play, and his listed 5’9” was about 3” too generous :) Thanks, Jimmy.
Jimmy Wynn had a great first half season in 1974 with the Dodgers. Then the opposing team realized he could not throw anymore and he was never the same player.
Helped lead the Dodgers to a pennant in 74. Never realized he was that small.
I was a fan of him when he was a Dodger.
Sad to hear. I sure saw my share of Astrodome Moon shots on TV that he laid on the the Dodgers when they were in town way back when.
If I recall they had a few seats with plaques on them way back in the upper Deck of the Astrodome where his longest Home Runs landed.
Jimmy Wynn was Ron Gant (hilariously listed at 6’) before Ron Gant. Good player. Small power hitter mostly in an era when 30 home runs was a real accomplishment. RIP
Played for Houston and the Yankees. Wonder if “bastard” or “SOB” was ever a nickname? Quite a life. RIP, you Houston bastard!
RIP.
RIP jimmy
RIP, Jimmy Wynn.
R.I.P. Jimmy.

Audio of Jim Wynn belting a Phil Neikro knuckler into the gold level (sixth level) of the Astrodome’s left field stands. The next batter, Joe Pepitone, joins the party. Loel Passe at the mic with an assist to the Astrodome scoreboard which was operated from the next room over.

Video of Jim Wynn smashing a pitch out of Cincinnati’s Crosley Field and onto the interstate. Loel Passe again.

Video of Jim Wynn drilling a home run out of the deepest part of Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field. They had the batting cages parked there (in play) with the belief nobody could hit the ball that far. That ball ended up on a Little League diamond that existed beyond the fence. Harry Kalas describes it.

When I lived in Houston, I really enjoyed the Astros in his heyday.
Sorry to hear he has passed.
