Coronavirus Pandemic Update 44: Loss of Smell & Conjunctivitis in COVID-19, Is Fever Helpful?

26,120 views•Mar 26, 2020

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update 44 with Roger Seheult, MD of https://www.MedCram.com

There is new evidence that loss of smell (anosmia) may be an indicator of COVD-19 infection. New reports also suggest that COVID-19 may cause conjunctivitis (pink eye), and be potentially spread through contact with the conjunctiva. Dr. Seheult discusses evidence about how untreated fever may be beneficial for fighting viral illnesses such as coronavirus.

The insistence of some people to counter every little fever with a fever reducer in most cases is counterproductive to the body fighting off a flu.

I have always heard that a low grade fever kills a virus. It’s the really high ones you need to take meds for to keep from baking your brains. The last flu I had about a decade ago that I thought was going to kill me produced a fever of 104/105. My husband had to carry me in to the doctor. That’s dangerously high since my normal temp is 97.5 all the time. I lucked out with that one since I have asthma. The weird thing is, my asthma wasn’t triggered that time.

My mom has a naturally low temp as you. I really have to keep an eye on her when she gets sick.

It takes a lot for me to run a fever. Even if it’s a normal 98.6 I can feel feverish. 104/105 should have killed me. I’m lucky that I’m rarely sick. My doctor said I have appear to have a good immune system, normal temp or not, even at 65.

Is gargling with mouthwash or saltwater a couple of times a day effective as a preventive or in reducing the viral load early in an infection?

Did you see this about a week ago?

If you’re taking your temperature because of the coronavirus, 98.6 isn’t the normal body temperature anymore, March 17, 2020, FR discussion of Seattle Times article.

If you’re taking your temperature because of the coronavirus, 98.6 isn’t the normal body temperature anymore, Seattle Times, March 17, 2020.

'Normal' Human Body Temperature Has Changed in the Last Century, January 14 ,2020, Time Magazine

I don't take my temperature much, but bought a thermometer for the current pandemic and am getting a normal reading in the high 97s. If I lie down and take a nap, my metabolism slows a lot and I get cold. I took one measurement during such an occurrence this week and my body temp was down about a half degree. Was it an accurate reading? How much is due to lack of repeatability of the digital thermometer (a common complaint)? I don't know.

I lost my sense of smell almost 2 years ago. Long before COVID-19 started.

I can still smell bullshit though, and there’s been a lot tossed around in the last few months.

Older folks have already lost the max taste and smell buds.

And since we're confined, we've been neutralized by living with the same old smells....and tastes go with it.

No, I hadn’t seen that. For once I’m normal! :-) I checked my thermometer by first putting it down in cold water and then in hot water. I won’t worry as much as long as I have enough temp to fight sickness.

Granny always said the best fever breaker is a hot bath and a thermometer. Keep your temp below 104, above 101.

I think I had this a few weeks ago. Very, very mild for me if so. I had 2 nights where I woke up in sweat, and had the really weird dreams I get when I am sick, mucus boiling up into my throat and crap in my eyes for the 2 mornings following. No obvious cough that I couldn’t explain away blaming smoking.

Mentioned this to my brother and sister in law last week and they said they had the same non-coughing symptoms.

Digital, plus or minus one of the smallest digits of the instrument is very accurate. All digital instruments round up or down 1 of the smallest digit, so a realistic body temperature device should read to 98.65 not 98.6.

The .001 digit is the throwaway, the grey area of the black and white digital world.

Very retro. When I was a kid, they said, “Cover up, and sweat it out.”

Try oregano oil P73 brand from Amazon’s 3/8 of an inch in the dropper 3 or 4 times a day for a couple of week if your sinuses are not clear.

Some times clears that up.

Take with water, its powerful.

Also take at first sign of sore throat and sinus drain. Stops that kind of cold in its tracks. Or “stomach flu”.

You will see results within 20 minutes.
