13 Deaths in a Day: An ‘Apocalyptic’ Coronavirus Surge at an N.Y.C. Hospital

In several hours on Tuesday, Dr. Ashley Bray performed chest compressions at Elmhurst Hospital Center on a woman in her 80s, a man in his 60s and a 38-year-old who reminded the doctor of her fiancé. All had tested positive for the coronavirus and had gone into cardiac arrest. All eventually died.

Elmhurst, a 545-bed public hospital in Queens, has begun transferring patients not suffering from coronavirus to other facilities as it moves toward becoming one dedicated entirely to the outbreak. Doctors and nurses have struggled to make do with a few dozen ventilators. Calls over a loudspeaker of “Team 700,” the code for when a patient is on the verge of death, come several times a shift. Some have died inside the emergency room while waiting for a bed.

A refrigerated truck has been stationed outside to hold the bodies of the dead. Over the past 24 hours, New York City’s public hospital system said in a statement, 13 people at Elmhurst had died.

“It’s apocalyptic,” said Dr. Bray, 27, a general medicine resident at the hospital.

With ventilators in short supply, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, one of the city’s largest systems, has begun using one machine to help multiple patients at a time, a virtually unheard-of move, a spokeswoman said.

In the neighborhood it serves, Elmhurst, more than two-thirds of residents were born outside of the United States, the highest such rate in the city. It is a safety-net hospital, serving mainly low-income patients, including many who lack primary care doctors.

Patients came in faster than the hospital could add beds; earlier this week, 60 coronavirus patients had been admitted but were still in the emergency room. One man waited almost 60 hours for a bed last week, a doctor said.

The patients coming in now are sicker than before

It appears that most of the dead in NYC are in a city-run hospital that mostly serves low-income people. In an area with a lot of new immigrants, legal and illegal alike, it's likely that many don't have decent health insurance and will tend to avoid going to the doctor until it's too late, for fear of incurring significant medical debt. For humanitarian and practical reasons (i.e. to admit people who have the bug before they spread it to thousands), NYC should consider an announcement promising to test and treat covid-19 patients for free.

Successful therapy against Covid-19 virus from New York State:

Dr. Vladimir (Zev) Zelenko Board Certified Family Practitioner 501 Rt 208, Monroe, NY 10950 845-238-0000

March 23, 2020

To all medical professionals around the world:

My name is Dr. Zev Zelenko and I practice medicine in Monroe, NY. For the last 16 years, I have cared for approximately 75% of the adult population of Kiryas Joel, which is a very close knit community of approximately 35,000 people in which the infection spread rapidly and unchecked prior to the imposition of social distancing.

As of today my team has tested approximately 200 people from this community for Covid-19, and 65% of the results have been positive. If extrapolated to the entire community, that means more than 20,000 people are infected at the present time. Of this group, I estimate that there are 1500 patients who are in the high-risk category (i.e. >60, immunocompromised, comorbidities, etc).

Given the urgency of the situation, I developed the following treatment protocol in the pre-hospital setting and have seen only positive results:

1. Any patient with shortness of breath regardless of age is treated.

2. Any patient in the high-risk category even with just mild symptoms is treated.

3. Young, healthy and low risk patients even with symptoms are not treated (unless their circumstances change and they fall into category 1 or 2).

My out-patient treatment regimen is as follows:

1. Hydroxychloroquine 200mg twice a day for 5 days

2. Azithromycin 500mg once a day for 5 days

3. Zinc sulfate 220mg once a day for 5 days

The rationale for my treatment plan is as follows. I combined the data available from China and South Korea with the recent study published from France (sites available on request). We know that hydroxychloroquine helps Zinc enter the cell. We know that Zinc slows viral replication within the cell. Regarding the use of azithromycin, I postulate it prevents secondary bacterial infections. These three drugs are well known and usually well tolerated, hence the risk to the patient is low.

Since last Thursday, my team has treated approximately 350 patients in Kiryas Joel and another 150 patients in other areas of New York with the above regimen.

Of this group and the information provided to me by affiliated medical teams, we have had ZERO deaths, ZERO hospitalizations, and ZERO intubations. In addition, I have not heard of any negative side effects other than approximately 10% of patients with temporary nausea and diarrhea.

In sum, my urgent recommendation is to initiate treatment in the outpatient setting as soon as possible in accordance with the above. Based on my direct experience, it prevents acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), prevents the need for hospitalization and saves lives.

With much respect,

Dr. Zev Zelenko

Ironically, within Queens, Elmhurst is adjacent to Corona.

[Successful therapy against Covid-19 virus from New York State:]

It’s pretty amazing that Trump mentioned a treatment costing peanuts, and the media are slamming that mention while lauding treatments costing 4x as much with roughly the same results. If Biden had mentioned it, they would have been lauding him as the Second Coming.

The FluBros will say these three died of cardiac arrest and not coronavirus.

Somehow my post from the Queens Patch was deleted in favor of your post. In this article, the hospital spokeswoman
initially denied that 13 COVID=19 patients had died, then later said 13 patients died who were in ICU.

The rule is that you need to post the original title.

I don’t believe the NYT’s. They are presumptive liars and have admitted as such.

I doubt that’s what’s happening here. Illegals can’t leave the country, because they can’t get back in. The only ones who will chance a departure are dangerous criminals on the run from the law. Any viral transmission likely came from citizens and legal aliens who traveled to cities where they caught the bug, then returned stateside.

It’s unfortunate that the end of flights from China wasn’t accompanied by mandatory testing and quarantine. Then again, there were all kinds of theories floating around about how Chinese sanitary practices and genetics made them uniquely susceptible, so not locking people up until they tested negative might have been a reasonable response.

It’s news in the sense that life expectancy in NYC (81.2 years) is 2.5 years longer than the average life expectancy for the country (78.7).

This is a city-run last resort hospital, so I gotta wonder at the quality of doctors there. At the same time, they’re getting swamped (125% of capacity), so there’s not a lot of time to reflect at leisure on what to do. They’re in complete reactive mode in response to one crisis after another.

You don’t know what they died of.

Death stats can’t be trusted because deaths worldwide are being tallied up as caused by coronavirus when the virus may have been only a complication, or the last straw for someone who was near death anyway.

The number of people who have the virus is far higher than the known number of cases, therefore the death rate is far lower than the numbers show at this point. The true number of people who contract the virus will never be known because so many don’t seek medical attention or get tested for it.
