I mentioned it the other day, and find it rather poignantly ironic that the formerly rebellious young gays, who wouldn’t hear of quarantine back in the day, now aged and wiser, wish in hindsight that science had been able to respond to AIDS with the same intensity as COVID:

San Francisco Man Says 80s AIDS Crisis Feels Far Different From Coronavirus Pandemic

at least 6,420 in Queens
3,616 in Manhattan
5,232 in Brooklyn
3,542 in the Bronx
1,166 on Staten Island

I’m wondering why Staten Island has fewer cases than the other boroughs?

Could it be there are no subways or the population density there is less than Brooklyn or Queens?

Probably both....density and no subways.

At least on the ferry you can space and have a bit of fresh air.

“San Francisco Man Says 80s AIDS Crisis Feels Far Different From Coronavirus Pandemic”

I guess one difference is that it was fairly easy to avoid getting AIDS, if one chose that path - whereas not so easy to avoid Coronavirus.

well, unless you were a woman whose date didn’t tell her he was bi, which got it into the kids

The attitude of the rebellious gays of the 80s remind me a lot of the flubros of today. I wonder if 20 or 40 years from now, flubros also will look back with regret over their own resistance to shelter-in-place/quarantine.

US NAVY - San Diego

San Diego-based Navy ship orders crew confined on board amid soaring COVID-19 case numbers

The crew of the San Diego-based amphibious transport dock Somerset have been ordered to remain on board the ship as the Navy announced Wednesday that six more San Diego-based sailors have tested positive for COVID-19.

...The move came as the Navy announced the largest single-day jump in confirmed coronavirus cases Navy-wide. Seventeen Navy sailors and civilians were announced positive for COVID-19 late Wednesday.

Among them are two sailors stationed aboard San Diego-based ships; however, the Navy is no longer disclosing which ships have positive coronavirus cases.

Scary stat of the day:

China, Italy, the USA, Spain, Germany, and Iran all have sufficient numbers of deaths and recovered patients to make a meaningful comparison of deaths to recovered patients (i.e., closed cases).

The numbers below represent the percentage of CLOSED CASES (i.e., cases where the patient has either died or recovered) in those 4 countries:

China - 3,287 / (3,287 + 74,051) = 4.3% (but how reliable is that? Well, we know it's at least as bad as that, since the Chinese would not make the situation look worse than it really is.)
Italy - 7,502 / 7,503 + 9,362) = 44.5%
USA - 1,031 / (1,031 + 593) = 63.5%
Spain - 3,647 / (3,647 + 5,367) = 40.5%
Germany - 206 / (206 + 3,547) = 5.5%
Iran - 2,077 / (2,077 + 9,625) = 17.7%

Now, of course, one of the objections that will be raised is that this includes only diagnosed cases, and ignores people who recovered from COVID-19, but were never officially diagnosed. That is, of course a valid criticism of this statistic.

So let's assume that in each country, the number of recovered cases is actually 10 times higher than reported. The numbers then become:

China - 3,287 / (3,287 + 740,510) = 0.4%
Italy - 7,502 / 7,503 + 93,620) = 7.4%
USA - 1,031 / (1,031 + 5,930) = 14.8%
Spain - 3,647 / (3,647 + 53,670) = 6.4%
Germany - 206 / (206 + 35,470) = 0.6%
Iran - 2,077 / (2,077 + 96,250) = 2.1%

So even if we assume that 10 times as many people have recovered than is reported, 14.8% of the closed cases in the United States have ended in death, 7.4% in Italy, 6.4% in Spain, and 2.1% in Iran.

That, folks, is one reason among many why this is not "just like the flu."

Daily update of projected (not predicted) confirmed cases.

Today’s rate of increase: 24.6%. This is the second straight day where it has been lower than projected.

Average Daily rate of increase in confirmed cases since 2/28: 30.9%
Weekly rate of increase in confirmed cases: 659.9%
Days to doubling of confirmed cases: 2.6

Number of confirmed cases by 11:59 pm tomorrow, 3/26/20: 90,395

Date to pass China in officially confirmed cases: 3/26/20 (Really only symbolic, because, of course, China’s numbers are bogus, but it does serve as a kind of benchmark, given that we know it’s at least as bad as they’ve admitted.)

Date to reach 100,000 cases: 3/27/20
Date to reach 1,000,000 cases: 4/4/20

Numbers are based on the reported confirmed cases by Johns Hopkins and Worldometers.

Every state with hospitals in crisis needs to set something like this up, for those who hoarded just a little too much, or might be able to donate a can or two of Lysol spray:

How you can donate protective medical supplies in Sacramento
The county is accepting the following unused items:
N95 mask of any type
Surgical or procedural masks
Non-latex medical gloves
Hand sanitizers
Disinfectant sprays

The donation site is at 9680 Conservation Road in Sacramento. Donations are accepted Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. [until April 8]

Brown added Hands On Sacramento and Just Serve are in need of volunteers.

Sutter Health, Kaiser Permanente and UC Davis Medical Center are each accepting community PPE donations as well. Each hospital has a list of items needed from the community.

Newsom added Richard Branson is using his own plane to transport 1 million N95 masks and Elon Musk is providing 1,225 ventilators.

““sanctuary city” and/or Chinatown problem”

Not really, even though it is that too.

CA has a total of 2,500 cases, 60 deaths in a state of 40 million which has served as the gateway to China for decades. I haven’t searched and compiled, but I bet that leads the country, or darn close to it.

Compared to GA, NY, LA, WA and IL for percentages and the state has barely been touched.

Maybe they’re just slow and will follow others. But it doesn’t look like it.

I’m betting CA leads the country in Sanctuary Cities and Chinatowns too:)

you will never hear about the real ones. But here’s some other boomers:

Reuters: US seafood state of Alaska’s economy in ‘critical condition’

The seafood industry, the state’s largest private-sector employer, is facing a dearth of processing plant workers, a large percentage of whom come from outside the US, the article notes.
The tourist season, which many Alaskan communities depend on for much of their years’ income, is in the dumpster, as cruise companies have canceled trips.
Governor Mike Dunleavy on Friday proposed an emergency April payment to state citizens from the state’s Permanent Fund of $1,306...

Well, at least you know that if they start the process of “vent”ing (what is that?), you may as well ask for the triple dose of morphine to go out quietly.

NZ fishers aiming to stay on vessels until end of lockdown

Although all domestic travel is set to be banned by the national government, Sanford Fisheries has been deemed an essential service, and hence the fishers are more than happy to go back to sea.
“I never thought I’d be so happy to see work again”, one deckhand is quoted by Stuff, noting that work aboard the vessel was now her only escape from being stuck in her house for an indefinite span.
All those heading to sea will be tested for COVID-19 before sailing, potentially for six weeks.

“Do not go into other neighborhoods for recreation. This increases the risk of virus spread.”

Is he saying that just being there and breathing (exercise) is enough to spread the virus?
