New study casts doubt on hyrdoxychloroquine’s effectiveness in treating coronavirus vs. standard existing best practice for conventional care
Tech Crunch ^ | 03/25/2020 | Darrel Etherington

In a prime example of why President Trump shouldn’t be endorsing any unproven potential treatments for the novel coronavirus behind the current global pandemic, a new small-scale study by researchers in China indicates that the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine actually isn’t any more effective than standard, existing best practice for conventional care of patients with the virus.

The study, which included 30 patients with a control of 15 who received no treatment, with the other half being treated with hydroxychloroquine, showed that there was a statistically insignificant difference in the number of patients who tested negative for the drug after a week. During the study, those who received conventional treatment were provided anti-virals that are currently recommended for use in China, including Iopinavir and ritonavir, and after a week, 13 of the 15 control patients showed no sign of the virus, while 14 of the 15 who were treated with hydroxychloroquine showed the same.

An earlier small-scale study of 30 patients by French researchers published last week had shown indication that hydroxychloroquine used alone was effective in reducing the duration and severity of COVID-19, while using it in combination with an antibiotic called azithromycin increased its effectiveness. The study has been criticized by some for its methods – which is the entire purpose of scientific study and medical research, wherein people submit their studies for peer review prior to publication, and then other researchers challenge their assumptions, results and findings.

Trump is obviously not a scientist or medical professional, and yet he has been touting the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine during the White House’s daily coronavirus task force press briefings, and on Twitter, including when he called for them to be “put in use IMMEDIATELY” on March 21.

That is counter to several trials...treatments I have seen where the combination has been 100% effective.

The article is highly misleading. The Bloomberg report pointed out that hydroxychloroquine worked about as well as antivirals.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-25/hydroxychloroquine-no-better-than-regular-covid-19-care-in-study

There’s no mention of azithromycin being used in conjunction with hydoxychloroquine, which is what worked well in France. What’s left out is that the antivirals are 4x the price.

Are 30 patents enough to constitute a serious study? Most people get better anyway, so such a small number proves nothing.

Why don't you read the paper and see for yourself. It is available here .

You may want to brush up on your statistics first. And note that the patients in the study group were not having a minor illness, but were seriously ill.

The authors are experienced experts. Here is a brief description of the lead author's work:

Philippe Gautret, MD, PhD, DTM&H

Head, Infectious Disease Outpatient Department Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire Méditerranée Infection Marseille, France

Dr. Philippe Gautret is a French tropical medicine physician specialized in travel medicine and Parasitology. He is currently the head of the Infectious Disease Out-Patient Department, of the Travel Clinic and of the Anti-Rabies Treatment Centre at the Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire Méditerranée Infection, in Marseille, France.

Dr. Gautret is also a French Army Reserve physician with the rank of Médecin en Chef (Lieutenant-Colonel) serving at the Center for Epidemiology and Surveillance for the French Army (CESPA) in Marseille. He is also the Site Director of ISTM’s GeoSentinel site in Marseille (MRS), as well as the current Project Director of GeoSentinel’s European Subnetwork, EuroTravNet, in addition to being a member of the World Health Organization’s Virtual Interdisciplinary Advisory Group on Mass Gatherings.

Dr. Gautret’s research activity takes place at the Vectors, Tropical and Mediterranean Infections (VITROME) research unit, Aix Marseille University, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Marseille. His research interests focus on travel-associated disease and emerging infectious diseases with a special interest in mass gathering medicine. He has co-authored more than 200 publications in the international literature and book chapters, and has published major studies and reviews in the field of travel and mass gathering medicine. He has been reviewer for the major journals of infectious diseases, and is currently Associate Editor of Travel medicine and Infectious Disease.

RE: That is counter to several trials...treatments I have seen where the combination has been 100% effective.

1) There is no mention of the use of the combination. Only the use of Hydroxycholroquine.

2) It does NOT say that Hydroxycholroquine was NOT effective. It says that it is not any more effective than standard conventional best practice.

3) What was left out of the article is the COST of one vs. the other.

My best friend is a doctor who had 3 Corona Virus patients. One is an 88 year old woman (w/ A-Fib and COPD) who is currently in the hospital. The other 2 are younger people who tested positive and got better within 24 hours of taking hydroxychloroquine and a Z-pack.

Sorry if you were commenting on the recent Chinese study, there are multiple different papers coming out of China with different conclusions. Some may be CCP propaganda.

The study, which included 30 patients with a control of 15 who received no treatment ... reject this outright. Redo the study with with more people. Statistical error is too high with a population that small.

I wonder if anyone has tried hyrdoxy/chloroquine, Zpac, Zinc, & Vitamin C in combo for a 1, 2, 3, 4 punch....

Anecdotally yes, I recall a patient testimonial which had that or a very similar combination. The patient recovered.

Sure, we’re to believe a Chinese study. No way anyone should believe any of the propaganda comming out of communist china. But obviously we have some dupes that will believe anything from china. Why post any of this BS from the propaganda mill that is communist china written by American dupes.

Also note this particular KEY sentence in the article:

“During the study, those who received conventional treatment were provided anti-virals that are currently recommended for use in China, including Iopinavir and ritonavir, and after a week, 13 of the 15 control patients showed no sign of the virus, while 14 of the 15 who were treated with hydroxychloroquine showed the same.”

So, BOTH were effective with hydroxychloroquine slightly better.

The article does not mention which treatment is MORE expensive.

How much is Iopinavir and ritonavir vs. hydroxychloroquine ( which costs just 5 cents per pill ).

RE: Why post any of this BS from the propaganda mill that is communist china written by American dupes.

Because this *IS* a scientific study.

You might not like the results, but hey fact is fact.

Garbage test. There is no control group with no treatment.

"The study, which included 30 patients with a control of 15 who received no treatment..."

1) Howe serious were their conditions?

2) You did not mention the result for the 88 year old woman. Younger people recover quickly,it is on aged people that the disease is most fatal ( see Italy and Spain and even here in the USA ).

It’s really sad when people just blast out their comments without reading the article. Thanks for the post.
