WeWork asks employees to value work versus safety in offering them money to go to the office during health crisis

Struggling office space company WeWork sent a memo on Tuesday to some of its employees with a new offer: $100 per day to come in to work. WeWork extended its offer to its U.S. and Canada “community employees,” the people who act as the “face of WeWork,” according to a LinkedIn job post. They perform tasks such as handling mail for WeWork tenants and covering the front desk.

In New York, where WeWork is headquartered, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered all nonessential businesses to keep 100% of their workforce at home in a desperate effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus. WeWork’s claim is that keeping certain offices running qualifies as essential because of the critical work some tenants are doing.

By the pictures I have seen of WeWork spaces there is not much social distancing. Will WeWork pay you if you go to their space and get COVID19?

Maybe the use of remote telepresence robots will become common after this plague passes.

I have seen these used in a hospital setting.

Hah!

I’m still working from the office. Might soon go to work from home.

But for another $100 per day?

I’ll be there.

Almost everyone in Eastern King County WA where we are at has probably already been exposed after it has been passed around here for at least the last 3 months. So I would take the $100 to go sit in a cubical. No one takes any precautions when they are hoarding napkins, paper towels, and toilet paper when they are lined up at the grociery store.

The problem with promising everybody full salaries to stay home, is that it is really hard to get people to work.

Walmart in virginia is offering $18.50 an hour for distribution center workers, with NO RESUME needed. Just show up, pass the background check, and you are in at more than double the minimum wage, with health benefits.

But they are having trouble because people who “lost their jobs” are just getting big unemployment checks and are expecting to get actual work checks because of the stimulus.

What burger king is paying $12.50 an hour, which is what you’d need for an 8-hour BK shift to give you more than $100?
