Shutting down our economy while China ramps up not only damages us economically, it is a national security concern.
If China or Russia perceives us weak economically, they could attack us.
There are so many people here that want us to be shut in, and that makes us vulnerable to rogue nations.
Yes, people may die. Up to a million. I may die if I contract this virus.
I know we will all die if we shut down until a vaccine is made.

“I pray that in 100 years when historians write about this pandemic that their primary theme is not, “The United States was the modern nation least prepared for this pandemic physically, emotionally, culturally, and spiritually.””

If we let CCP-19 “blow through”, it will be.

Because it will be the Chinese writing all the history books.

Just understand that a destroyed economy has a cost in lives as well. It truly is a fine line the President has to walk. He’s not copping out or bailing like so many have in the past.

This is true. It is a very, very fine line to walk, and we can't expect him to walk it perfectly.

All that does is start the cycle over every two weeks. Failure.

“Because they and theirs are holed up at home, safely.”

Another month and it will be every man for himself.

Only the strong will survive. And it will play out on the international stage.

Just reality.

Again, why don’t you spend some time reading.

No one is suggesting an indefinite shut down. It is an ebb and flow. Shut down long enough to allow healthcare to catch up, open long enough to allow economy to catch up. This “dance” will have to continue for a long time for this to neither crash the economy or the healthcare system. You cannot crash either. Do you get that? Because crashing ONE crashes BOTH.

Even the dichotomy on FR is a fascinating picture of this...what happens when presented with a situation where there are no good answers (I get reminded of those on the top floors of the World Trade Center, who decided the best of the bad answers was to jump).

There are those here who would fight “Captain Trips” above all else and leave the issue of what is left of your country till after you have defeated.

There are others who do not believe that the virus is as devastating as those above, but who believe that the result of staying shut down until the virus is eradicated or cured will destroy the society and the nation, leaving us in a dark ages, or perhaps under the rule of the most ruthless nations left in existence, for the remainder of our natural lives.

There are probably those that believe neither as well...but I have no doubt that this is playing out in society at large as well. And it is possible that the rift cannot be closed and on the other side of this will be something that is not the nation we had before this, regardless of who was right.

Hubby and I prepped with a ‘what if this is 1929’ mindset with the idea that ‘normalcy’ might not ever return like we imagine it.

And we might spend the next 20 years or so in...interesting times...

Interestingly, the JH data went from county level, to State level, now it looks like it's at the city level for the US (it's still country-level in Europe). That destroys the ability to do proper time-series tracking but I'll take more granularity any day, even if it's late in the game.

Agnes, you're partly right about PA vs NYC; Philadlphia's SEPTA system is on par with the MTA in terms of geographic coverage. However, NYC has higher density than Philadelphia. Density has a lot to do with this IMHO.

If you want, I'll add you to my ping list on this sort of analysis.

I wouldn’t believe anything China says. Wait for what they do, and then only for things which can be verified outside China.

“Herd immunity”

A good debate here. I think the USA is doing Herd Immunity to save as many lives as possible. Flatten the curve.

Here is something to add to the debate:
If the virus is attacking more young people would the shut down be justified?

If the virus cause people to be injury for life (bad lungs) is the shut down justified?

I think we will seen those answers soon.

China question:
If we shut our self down we would be vulnerable economically and Military. We need the factories open to produce stuff for the Military and Medical

I will have to go on the answer we need to balance the actions out. They need to get a blood test to determine who caught it already, so we can our medical people back to work. We can use that get people back to the factories. I think they are close to that test now.

As for the future: We need to pull factories out of China. If we must have factories overseas we need them in different part of world not just one country.

You don’t want to curtail individual liberties of those wanting to still hold Spring Break on the beach, SXSW, Mardi gras, 2020 Oympics, NY marathon, Boston St. Patrick’s parade, or the Houston rodeo?

I would add that we must view the data with granularity as Dr. Birx likes to say. When you break down the data by state and county, you can develop several different approaches whether it is containment, mitigation, etc. One size does not fit all in a country this big. Germany is about the size of Oregon in area.

We can tailor our approach by location, age, sex, population density, cases, and many other factors once we have sufficient data. I view this exercise as invaluable in preparing our country for bio-terrorism attacks.

I can read. You stated you aren’t voting for Biden and your aren’t voting for Trump. SO if you vote, you vote green party which is a vote for Biden. You skip voting for a POTUS and you’ve voted for Biden. I know it’s too simple for you and your emotions to decipher but I hope you get it.

Narcs don’t care about anyone but themselves.

They’re the ones pushing the ‘burn through it’ scenario.

They only see the value of their portfolio and that’s their only metric.

They perceive, wrongly, that the burn through it scenario wouldn’t absolutely destroy their portfolios MORE than the start stop start stop scenario.

Long term thinking isn’t in their wheelhouse.

I've read how bad you get it depends upon the initial viral load you receive. If you come in contact with only a few particles, your body has time to build up at least some resistance to the virus before it can replicate to larger amounts.

This makes me think masks really are helpful.

Anyway, doctors, nurses, others sometimes received huge viral loads when coughed or sneezed upon, some say.
