Deborah D. Moore knows a thing or two about prepping her pantry for an extended period of time, having lived most of her life as a prepper before there was even a word to describe prepping.
When I was a newlywed, just 19 years old, we lived in Detroit, explained Moore, the author of A Preppers Cookbook, in an interview with Fox News. I heard there was a snow storm coming and we were to stay off the roads I checked my cupboards and we had a half loaf of bread and two cans of soup.
As Moore told Fox News, she drove to a nearby market to pick up supplies, only to find chaos and enormous check-out lines.

Ping.
I don’t consider myself a prepper, but I am prepared. Living in flyover country North Dakota, you can count on 1-2 big blizzards hitting every year. I keep a solid 1week supply of food and water for myself, wife, and 4x kids. (and a months worth of firewood for the fireplace.) It’s a fair bit for 6 people. You can bank on roads closed and even power out.
I.e., what are the two or three essential items that one (surprisingly) should have in one's cupboard?
(Wish they'd always begin the article with the essential info!)
Regards,
I do that here too. Im always advanced by weeks in groceries regardless. Before the grocery lines went nuts 2 weeks ago I stocked up and didn’t know it was going to be this crazy.
On Guam, everyone was advised to have a “Typhoon closet” with a week’s worth of canned/dried goods, 5 days bottled water, candles, batteries, 1st aide supplies, a 25-yard roll of plastic and either an extra 40-pound tank of propane or 50 pounds of charcoal. When a typhoon was forecasted everyone would gas up their car.
No mention of bacon or ammo, not very well prepared IMO.
Sooner or later, veryone is a prepper - some just dont know it yet.
duct tape
I am on a limited diet due to allergies and when the flu thing started hitting China and I saw the draconian measures they were using to control it, and the people, I decided to start stocking up even more than usual.
So I bought a little more of everything I usually use every time I went out and did this for about 2 mos before Friday, March 13th, when this all hit the fan.
It seems like an eternity ago and I never dreamed things would get so bad so fast.
So although I have always prepped for winter, I never really thought I’d need to prep because of other people’s reactions. That was an eye opener for me.
When things settle down some, I will make sure we are way more prepped than we were this time, as nobody knows what next year is going to bring in regard to resurgence of the virus.
Not to mention what may be happening leading up to and following the election. If Trump wins, I expect it to be worse than 2016, and if he loses, we’re screwed anyways and need to be ready for that.
I dont see myself as a preppier but looking about here we easily have two months of everything we could possibly need as we prepare our meals home almost everyday anyway. The meals would be relatively balanced too. Only thing I stock up on during hurricane season is gasoline. Oh have enough lead to shield us from a Chernobyl style incident too!
Meanwhile I was chatting with a neighbor this weekend and inquired about what she normally does for dinner. She said we make reservations! I asked how that working now. She said no problem as most are doing takeout. I moved some lead shielding to her side of our home for if they close.
Yup. Pretty sad.
Would that be a French prepper?
Thanks for the laugh
Good info. My husband and I bought a gas grill at the end of last season. I’ve been able to do several day’s cooking in less than an hour on the grill. I did a B.J.’s run in January (usually done every 3-4 months) got out early this time as the writing was on the wall. Husband put additional shelves in basement for dry goods like mac and cheese and stuff he gets cravings for. So far it’s working. I hope all are faring as well.
Y’know, they used to lead with the essential information. The whole practice is upended in the hope for clicks taking you to the website.
“... I never dreamed things would get so bad so fast....”
Most people don’t. And that’s the problem - Things can get feral REAL fast.
Look up “Selco: One Year In Hell”, if you want to see HOW feral.
Now, we’re not there yet, but I’d say folks are pretty similar all over; “can’t happen here”, and then suddenly it does.
Never hurts to have a good store of supplies, ammo, water, etc.
There used to be a thread called ATRW on FR. One of the guys was an amateur weather forecaster in the DC area, so he used to post snowstorm forecasts in terms of rolls of TP needed because of the tendency for folks to go and strip the stores bare of their version of survival supplies.
It’s very obvious it occurs, but only apparent if you happen to be out of the needed supplies at the time. Until it became a running joke here, I wasn’t aware of the tendency either as I’ve never done the 2-3 days supply thing. Forget the coronavirus, just snowstorms and bad work schedules should be enough to warrant changing your ways.
Which is why I’ve always prepped for winter.
I HATE schlepping stuff in through the snow and slop, and after watching the ensuing panic over every nor’easter that we’d be plowed out from the next day, I decided then that I didn’t want to be part of it.
However, my prepping its going to a new level ASAP.
