A statue of the Angel Moroni sits atop the Salt Lake Temple in a 2015 photo. The temple was damaged Wednesday in an earthquake that also dislodged Moroni's trumpet.
(CNN)The 5.7-magnitude earthquake that shook Utah Wednesday morning also dislodged a symbolic part of Salt Lake City's iconic Mormon temple: the trumpet of an angel statue atop its highest spire.
The temple is the spiritual focal point for the 16 million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
"The trumpet on the Angel Moroni statue fell off, and there is minor displacement of some of the temple's smaller spire stones," said Daniel Woodruff, a spokesman for the church.

the angle moroni? um... is that because only a moron would believe the story?
ROFL
Alternate theory:
Mornoni goes on strike, dropping trumpet, after learning the mormon religion has horded over $38 billion and kept it secret from membership...
Well, that’s poetic.
Pierre Demento being send a message?
The followers of Joseph Smith’s delusions should delete one m from the name.
I”m not Mormon, but see no real merit in criticizing their religion.
I was raised as Catholic, but right now my former church has demonstrated that leadership at the top is apparently largely corrupt and largely gay. Not exactly something to be proud of.
And a good deal of Protestant churches are finding it less and less convenient to be Christian either.
And so goes the world.
I bet that temple was FULL of stained magic underwear
Sounds familiar: 1 Samuel 5 v3 and v4.

METAPHOR ALERT!
Moroni’s going to air trumpet...
Well there ya go.
Amen! I wouldn’t be surprised if the Lord unleashes swarms of locusts and world wide plague on us all. Hopefully, he spares the good people.
There seems to be a lot of anti Mormon sentiment on Free Republic. I’ve never understood it.
If you want to get into theology, we could all have endless debates in that area. I understand some such as fundamentalist or Evangelical Christians can never endorse Mormon theology, but then they can’t endorse theology of other religions in the first place anyway.
And introducing criticism of Mitt Romney into this, just because many of us disagree with him politically, seems to be a cheap shot at the LDS church. Mitt is not the personification of what people believe is wrong with the Mormon church, is he?
IIRC, the temple was closed down a year or so ago to be earthquake-proofed. Sounds like for good reason.
All religions set themselves up to be criticized, simply by claiming to posess the truth. Im a Christian and have done a very intense study of Mormonism, owning many books and even a handful of their own documents.
Im not sure if youve read up on the Kinderhook Plates or read any studies on what they call The Book of Abraham. Thats just the very beginning of what you can learn about their deception. The come to your house to offer a Bible, but are really intent on having you read the Book of Mormom. Then theyll ask you to read it an with sincerity ask Hod if the book is true. Never mind actual history that doesnt exist. If you read it but tell them you dont accept it, the missionaries are left thinking that you must not have been sincere.
A new convert accepts the Book and is soon introduced to a ton of doctrines that are neither biblical, or even mentioned in the Book of Mormon at all. Its bait and switch, and as deceptive as they could ever be.
If you really investigate the Kinderhook Plates and the Book of Mormon with sincerity, youll see that none of what they teach can be true.
In all honesty, I feel sorry for them.
