What are some of your thoughts on the huge WHAT IF that is potentially looming at the moment?
Personally, I don't see how it makes any actual difference to the covid-19 issue. The virus won't magically disappear from the nation even if it is a wonderfully successful effort, and we will be right back where we are today within a month or so afterwards.

I think that one guy is really pushing this. I forget his name but starts with an “A.”
No way can we all survive that.
Our store shelves are still empty.

As far as the poor go, we will see suspensions of evictions and utility shut-offs, with the losses papered over with printed money, which reduces the problem to feeding people.

This has become stupid. Politicians dont know what runs an economy. They think goods and services just appear because they allow it.
Politicians should be talking about maintaining normalcy in business, manufacturing, distribution and logistics.

Ignoring the political question for the moment - it would likely reduce/delay the spread of the virus and break many infection chains that would have otherwise formed. While it is true that pretty much everyone is going to get infected at some point before a workable vaccine is made, the point is to reduce the infection *rate* to something our medical system can handle. As several people have pointed out - we actually have less ICU beds per 1000 people than Italy does, and look at how well that worked out for Italy.

Maybe enough people will ignore it that the WuFlu will continue to spread — and her immunity will begin to develop?

Since this is unlikely, I’m not going to worry about it.

Just watching the news, I think the states are doing this one by one on their own.

Democrats have already advocated going around spreading the virus in Republican offices and rallies.
A federal quarantine would interfere with their freedom to expression their political thoughts.
Keep in mind that the bearing of breasts has been classified as political speech in the past, as has other behavior that has nothing to do with the utterance of words.

The virus won't magically disappear from the nation even if it is a wonderfully successful effort, and we will be right back where we are today within a month or so afterwards. They WANT people to get it to acquire immunity...but they don't want a lot of people to get it all at once and overwhelm the medical system. So I think they won't care much if it's spread around a bit by quarantine breakers.
To: Teacher317
The goal is to get between 3/4 to 7/8 of people to voluntarily choose to isolate. Much more effective to tame viral spread than mandatory quarantine.

I don’t think Trump can and would do this. He can and should close all borders but local non-federal closures need to come from states. Someone posted a great comment about this in an FR thread earlier today.

Bernie will get his bread lines. If Trump doesn't get things turned around and turn travel back on in 90 days, he'll be couped. We wont like things after that.

Vanity question - WHAT-IF? Assume Trump orders a 14-day US-wide quarantine... What happens?
Well then there will be a 14-day quarantine. If you want more than that you'll have to consult a team of science fiction writers, philosophers, religious people, and economists. And after all that, you will not arrive at a consensus, as the future is notoriously hard to predict even when you think you have all the 'facts'.
