Coronavirus Prediction (Vanity)
3-15-20 | Myself

Posted on 03/15/2020 8:20:47 AM PDT by Crucial

I don't believe the Coronavirus will get in America out of hand like it did in China. I also believe the danger will pass in a fee weeks if we can just push through and not panic. There are a few reasons I say this. The most important reason is that we were forewarned. Lets hear it for the the power of free speech. It's something the Chinese people lack and allowing better communication could have saved more of them.

The Chinese people were not warned about the virus. Indeed, the Chicoms did their best not to warn their people. It was only when it got out of control that they had to take measures to fight the virus. So they chose to enforce mandatory social distancing among other more violent measures.

Americans are practicing social distancing in spades. As a people we do so more than any country. We like our space and we've extended that space. Of course, in the long run it's not good for our society.

The other thing I think people are practicing is better hygiene practices. People are washing their hands more often and longer. They are buying up and using sanitizer. This is crucial to stopping any virus.

Lastly, denying access to this country from places where the virus is out of control is vital. This inhibits the "viral input" into our communities. The travel ban will probably have to extend until the Europeans and others get their act together.

I don't see a reason why we can't beat this virus quickly. The measures have been extreme for a free and open country but they were implemented early. I don't see any reason why this virus won't peak soon and the cases start dropping precipitously.

You are falling into a very well designed trap. 5000 deaths is a statistic, but if I can get you to talk about one name with one face, it is now a tragedy with impact. We must separate the statistical epidemiology from the case by case emotional heart strings. I see ARDS every day both prior to Sars2-CoVID19 and will likely see cases, both explained and unexplained after this outbreak.

When I have a death, it is a tragedy as I sit with the family, and try in some way to help them understand what has happened. So, it is the last bastion of the hand wringers to point out — at SOMEPOINT you will know someone this affects. This is true, but at some point you will also know someone influenza, cancer, heart disease, and numerous other diseases affects, and yet you do not seem to ring the alarm bell about those. Is this a double standard? Indifference? Or the power of knowledge of those diseases?

Yep. Over the hump in a couple weeks, cautiously hold fast for a couple more. Then back to work.

We’ll still have the intended finial issues which will make Trump essential in Nov.

“The one thing I have not heard answered. If I get this, will or can I recover?”

In the reality all the doctors and hospitals are warning about it will depend on if you are patient 1 to 500 at a hospital that can handle, at maximum stress, 500 patients or if you are brought in after they’ve hit capacity, at least twice over (as happens when it hits).
The care you will be able to get will be more and more limited.
At one point, you could die from something very curable if you are unlucky enough to get it when this thing hits and is going full swing. A broken toe could be a death sentence if it gets infected if there’s not the personnel, time or resources to treat it.

When I here a sentence that contains “I believe” or “I think” I immediately place the sentence under same category as “I like cheese, do you like cheese?”

Would you rather that he begin every other sentence with "As a virologist, I can categorically state...," "As an epidemiologist, I have found..." or at least with "As a medical physician specializing in communicable diseases of the respiratory tract, I believe..."?

Yeah, come to think of it, so would I!

you need to check the timeline my FRiend....
this first became apparent in late november...
trump issued guidelines for the diplomats..
January 27, trump issues travel advisory for china... is called a racist and is challenged in court...
January 30th, travel moritorium for china... called a racist and is challenged in the courts...

trump has been trying to do the right thing since early december, and has been fought and called a racist since then (do not forget that pesky little impeachment thingie)

perhaps a little study time before saying trump is just now taking it seriously.... just sayin

An alternative theory from the sage words of none other than our founding fathers: Those willing to trade security for liberty are deserving of neither. Perhaps dial back your rhetoric that those of us who think using the statistics and not the panic are stupid a-holes. Might I, in the alternative, suggest you become bubble boy from Seinfeld. If you know what you walked past everyday of your life, you would not get out of bed in the morning. But why this? Why now?

In the words of scripture: Vanity of vanities there is NOTHING new under the sun. And this pandemic is acting just like the ones before it — and yet, you probably were not panicked about those. Why now?

Italy is the hardest hit hot-spot in Europe, supposedly their health care system has been brought to its knees. Over 60 million people live in Italy. During the 2017 - 2018 flu season “the number of influenza-attributable excess deaths was 24,981”, from https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1201971219303285

As of two days ago it was reported there were 1255 deaths this year from the Corona-virus during this flu season. Did we have the same type of breathless reporting during the 2017-18 flu season when there were 20 times more deaths from the flu?

Why didn't an infectious respiratory illness. with nearly the same symptoms that caused approximately 20 times more deaths cause the same type of chaos? Something does not add up. This virus is by all measures a variant of the flu. If there had not been living conditions in Wuhan that made it flair up in a spectacular way, there is a good chance that the virus would not have been identified, the excess deaths would habe been attributed to the flu and no worldwide panic would have ensued.

I have a theory. First, the COVID-19 virus is continuing to mutate slightly it infects person to person. The most deadly versions of the virus kills the persons and the mutated version dies with the persons death. The milder virus versions are more easily transmitted to additional people since they are in an alive person who affects others. Over time the virus will get more and more milder and many more people will be infected with the milder and more milder versions. But the milder visions of COVID-19 will still cause the people's immune system to attack the milder and more deadly versions of the COVID-19 virus. So in time almost everyone will have immunity. Q.E.D.

My BIL apparently has it. But whether it is personal or not, it is prudent to be aware, prepare, and act. Sticking with this head in the sand and ignoring or dismissing it, is a really poor choice of action. You leave the decisions to others, or you arrive too late to make competent helpful decisions yourself.

When are they going to start snatching up the homeless people living in tents? Until they start doing this I won’t take them seriously!

Or as an ICU nurse with 30 years experience, but yes, same principle applies, when making authoritative statements, demonstrate under what authority you speak.

Ok. As a critical care anesthesiologist treating patients in this pandemic as well as numerous other pandemics, I absolutely see no difference in the presentation of this disease versus influenza ARDS. If we are to believe even the worse case scenario with a mortality of 15% for people over 80, this means that 85% of even the most vulnerable survive and recover. Additionally, as someone well educated in viral spread of disease, (the original meaning of something gone viral), I would bet that if we knew the seroconversion rate for this, we would find that the true number of cases if both significantly larger and has been around significantly longer than has been reported, which makes the true death rate and infection rate significantly less than reported currently.

If only people like you were in charge, there wouldn’t even be a Coronavirus.

We should listen to know-it-alls like you.

We were forewarned, but we didn’t do anything about getting people tested in a timely manner. As such, we still don’t really know who has it, and who doesn’t. This causes a myriad of problems. And, it’s still spreading. And, because of the lack of testing, you’re going to have those infected people walking around infecting everybody else. And, some of these will be those same people who think that taking a handful of vitamins and howling at the moon will keep them from getting the flu, and that this virus is no different.

It is not a matter of comparing against the entire population, it is really a matter of comparing against those people who really get sick enough to require treatment, versus those who die at that point. Those statistics are devastating. Compare against the entire population if you want to dismiss and ignore everything. Even by the administrations explanations, the mortality rate is 10 times or more higher. And with older age groups even here. Yes, that is an abstract statistics for most people but should be sobering to anybody that’s willing to think about it in a non-political way.

“Are more people currently recovering from this than getting sick? Have people who contracted it actually gotten better.”

Yes.

You dont see those stats published because they aren’t “sexy”.
