Prior to WW2, it was those 2 huge oceans on either side of the country...perhaps they’re thinking that now? Unless you can come up with a better answer.

That definitely is part of it. But it's also a cultish belief in the 'power of positive thinking'. They feel that slogans and platitudes are all that are needed. Here's an interesting tidbit I found:

In his book, Authentic Happiness, Seligman writes “positive thinking often involves trying to believe upbeat statements such as ‘Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better,’ in the absence of evidence, or even in the face of contrary evidence.” But while some people may be able to buy into affirmations and other positive statements like these, Seligman warns that “many educated people, trained in skeptical thinking, cannot manage this kind of boosterism.”

Every decade or so another wave of positive thinking zealotry gets pushed a little further into the American mainstream. Beyond merely thinking positively, these belief systems foment an inability to hold, process, or empathize with so-called “negative” feelings and emotions. The result is a culture or atmosphere that becomes toxic and oppressive.

The economic pain from the supply chain issues has nothing to do with any of us on this board.

WE didn’t quarantine entire provinces in China with the military.

WE didn’t shut down shipping and entire ports in China.

THOSE effects will be felt for a year or more.

As far as the National Emergency...do you think Trump is an idiot? Do you think he’s doing what he’s doing because of a few ‘gaslighters’ as you call them? You think mmmMMMmaybe Trump has advisors that know what they’re doing here?

True. But from what we’ve read that Vietnam/India stuff still gets parts from China.

China is somewhere in the supply chain for pretty much everything now.

Our goal with parts buying was to basically ensure we had one vehicle running just in case things were dodgy for a year or so.

We went shopping during that time, and don’t have to wait in long, nasty lines now.

I was going to say the same. China is (or was, I guess) well over 50% of the world’s steel production. You need steel for brake pads (unless we go back to re-lining...but I doubt anyone even knows how to do it now). Probably the same for just about everything else.

It will be very difficult to get China’s sticky fingers out of just about everything we buy...maybe not even possible.

Sadly, yes, the violence is going to rise as much as the new cases. It went from stealing all the tp and sanitizer to bloody fights in a matter of hours. With all the empty shelves yesterday, I was greatly surprised no one was begging to have something out of my cart which is normal behavior here.

Whoa! It’s Spring Break but it’s quiet out on the lake. There was minimal weekenders partying last night.

WE saw the military quarantine of entire provinces and went !!!!! ‘when have the chicoms ever done THAT before’...’what do we need to have that comes from China’.

WE saw what the virus did to South Korea. Entire cities were quarantined and large and even medium/small gatherings were prohibited. WE thought ‘hey, if WE were locked in OUR homes for 2 or 3 weeks...what would we need to have’...

It’s not OUR fault you didn’t pay attention to South Korea.

Or Italy.

Or now Spain.

etc.

YOU weren’t paying attention to world affairs. Don’t accuse US of gaslighting and ‘destroying the economy’ because WE were were paying attention.

I have to admit I’m shocked by the grocery store runs.

I’m guessing people eat out even more than I thought and basically had to completely stock a pantry/fridge/freezer from scratch for 2 or 3 weeks worth of food.

I’d also have thought people kept a cpl 2 or 3 weeks of TP around just so they didn’t have to buy it all the time. Wrong there.

We stocked up end of Jan/first cpl weeks of Feb just so we wouldn’t have to get out and be exposed to sick people. Hubby is 50 with high blood pressure and asthma so we’re protecting him.
