I’d consider it, depending on the situation.

Not me. Not ever. I want a human driving, even with the mistakes that get made sometime.

I might consider it in city traffic at 10 mph but not for the interstate at 70 mph.

I’ve been saying for years that self-driving cars are a solution in search of a problem.

I’m not comfortable with giving my life into its hands without a spotless driving record for a year.

These questions are good:

“Personally, I’m not quite as concerned over the ability of the technology to ferry us around as I am with the underlying artificial intelligence involved. It sounds as if they are getting to the point where the cars can safely navigate their way around under normal circumstances. But when the unexpected happens (as it always will), I’d want to know a lot more about the “decision making” process going on under the hood. If three people suddenly leap out in front of my car with no safe way to avoid them and I’m the only passenger inside, will the car choose to hurl me off of a cliff to spare three lives at the cost of one?”

I definitely want flow charts and decision protocols before I buy one.

“Also, how much of the car’s intelligence is completely internal and how much (if any) is it relying on satellite data? If that GPS signal and other information are suddenly lost, can the car keep driving safely or will it just drift into the oncoming lane of traffic while I’m busy writing an article in the back seat?”

Excellent question! I assume all the ‘knowledge’ is locally cached and NOTHING is dependent upon a network which can fail at any time. I want guarantees from the manufacturer about this and a clear statement of their liability for all accidents they cause.

Show me with an affordable self-driving mower for my property. Show me with an affordable, effective household robot that actually does domestic chores successfully. Jumping immediately to cars where the consequences are death, is a bridge too far for me.

Only because few have experienced it, so generally vague fear of the unknown.

Been in a Tesla Model 3 with Autopilot. Completely comfortable with it following the road, even noticing a “is it going to stop?” truck approaching an intersection and it slowed down appropriately.
Ordered a Cybertruck with “full self drive”. Am very much looking forward to 1000+ mile drives, where bulk of it is hands-off-wheel self-drive so I don’t have to focus on micro-managing driving on simple smooth roads for hours on end (happy to take over any time things even hint at complicated).

I’ve seen MANY new technologies appear, initially met with “95% say they wouldn’t use it” only to soon become absolutely pervasive with 95% using it without concern. Credit cards, GPS, cell phones, digital cameras, lots of other stuff started with “no way”, followed by seemingly overnight adoption by all.

Once people actually experience self-driving cars, they’ll prefer them for most “cruise mode” driving.

My personal prediction is that self-driving cars will not be ready for prime time any decade soon. Even if the statistics prove that accidents are no more likely, people will just not accept them. Bet on it.

What percentage ride motorcycles. 1 in 10 is plenty. And with almost 30% in the maybe column. Then of course there’s the real target for the self driving: commercial trucking. It’s a ripe market.

I could see using a Transit System that picked up and dropped people off at designated stops. I think we already have that in some cities. Such Transit Systems have their own track and route. They don’t mix with regular drivers at all.

Will Boeing be involved in the programming? And what government agency will be in charge of licensing the specific vehicles allowed to be in the roads?
