Coronavirus is 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu, Trump's task force immunologist says
the week ^ | 3/11/2020 | the week

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told lawmakers during a House Oversight Committee hearing Wednesday that COVID-19 — the disease caused by the novel coronavirus — is probably about 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.

President Trump has often compared COVID-19 to the flu, which affects tens of thousands of Americans each year, in an effort to calm people down, but Fauci clearly wasn't trying to downplay the seriousness of the virus' spread. Fauci is a member of the White House's coronavirus task force.

At the same time, he did clarify that 10 times figure actually brings the new coronavirus' fatality rate lower than official estimates, which hover around 3 percent. The flu has a mortality rate of about 0.1 percent, so, when considering the likelihood that there are many asymptomatic or very mild cases that have gone undiagnosed, Fauci places the new coronavirus' lethality rate at somewhere around 1 percent. While that's a good deal lower than the current data suggests, it still would lead to significant numbers of fatalities, and makes the flu comparisons seem pretty questionable.

Because we are still at the low end of the exponential growth curve. Basically where Italy was ~3 weeks ago.

Just wait..the real fun is just getting started.

AND, if I turn out to be wrong, I’ll be the first one to say it.

agree-the real story is about the panic.

It might be 1%, but on fatalities is probably closer to Germany’s numbers 1,853 cases and 3 deaths or S Korea with 7.755 cases and 60 deaths-.007% the difference between these countries and others reporting higher rates are they are testing more people and most cases are mild and unreported in the other countries so higher fatality rate by age it is 0.2% under 40, but 10 to 14% over 80 . total fatalities are 4,500 with 96% in China, Iran or Italy, see https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

Words of wisdom. To many unknowns to even form a real picture of all that is happening.

10x the mortality presumably means 10x the ICU beds needed. During a bad flu season, ICU’s are stretched to the breaking point. The following is what happened in 2018:

https://time.com/5107984/hospitals-handling-burden-flu-patients/
[The 2017-2018 influenza epidemic is sending people to hospitals and urgent-care centers in every state, and medical centers are responding with extraordinary measures: asking staff to work overtime, setting up triage tents, restricting friends and family visits and canceling elective surgeries, to name a few.

“We are pretty much at capacity, and the volume is certainly different from previous flu seasons,” says Dr. Alfred Tallia, professor and chair of family medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey. “I’ve been in practice for 30 years, and it’s been a good 15 or 20 years since I’ve seen a flu-related illness scenario like we’ve had this year.”

Tallia says his hospital is “managing, but just barely,” at keeping up with the increased number of sick patients in the last three weeks. The hospital’s urgent-care centers have also been inundated, and its outpatient clinics have no appointments available.]

10x the normal flu season may require emergency Federal funds to help staff up ICU’s and equip them specifically for this tidal wave of bug-related admissions.

So its about the same threat level as the Spanish Flu. A once in a century pandemic.

The world won’t end, but things are going to change for a year or two.

SARS and MERS were also corona viruses. MERS is the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and transmission was not limited to colder climates. Do not assume that this will follow the same patterns as a flu virus. It might, but there are just too many unknowns at this point for a complete risk assessment.

”[…] told lawmakers during a House Oversight Committee hearing Wednesday that COVID-19 […]"

It sounds like this is the meeting that PDJT didn’t attend this morning because of an emergency White House meeting on the same issue.

Trump calls emergency meeting with top US health officials at the White House Wednesday

So Dr. Anthony Fauci probably wasn’t directing his concern about coronavirus to PDJT’s ear.

Corrections welcome.

“So 1%.
The seasonal flu has a .01% mortality rate.
So much for the ghouls pushing the 3-5% figure”

So if people who overestimated by a factor of 2-4% are ghouls, what are the “just flu” people who underestimated by a factor of one hundred?

the disease caused by the novel coronavirus — is probably about 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.

PROBABLY...HMMMM.

They don't know shit because the pool is so low that valid stats are just a guess.

They will always over hype the bad, just to cover their own ass, in case it is bad.

They do not know, and the media will take the uncertainty and over blow it, because Trumpvirus bad.
