"Lowdown" - Boz Scaggs (video)

"Lowdown" is a song originally recorded in 1976 by Boz Scaggs for his album Silk Degrees. The song was co-written by Scaggs and keyboardist David Paich. Paich, along with fellow "Lowdown" session musicians bassist David Hungate and drummer Jeff Porcaro, would later go on to help form the band Toto.

Initially, Silk Degrees received a lukewarm commercial response and, similarly, the first single released from the album, "It's Over" barely cracked the top 40 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart, peaking at #38. One day, however, a Cleveland R&B radio DJ began playing "Lowdown" straight off the album. This was during a time when DJs had much more say in what was played.[3] Public response was very positive and soon Scaggs' record label, Columbia, sent the song to other R&B-oriented radio stations for airplay. It began being played on Top 40 Pop stations as well and, when it was officially released as a single in June 1976, it became Scaggs' first major hit, eventually peaking at number three on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. It was also successful on the R&B and Disco Singles charts, peaking at number five on both. The song was also a major hit in Canada, peaking at number two.

Had Jeff Porcaro lived longer, I’d put him in the same category as Steve Gadd or Harvey Mason.

If Scaggs had learned to enunciate, his songs might have done better. Lido Shuffle is actually very clever number but I’m sure most people didn’t understand the narrative. Silk Degrees also had the song, “We’re All Alone” which became a big hit for Rita Coolidge later on.

Cell phone ringer is now the beginning of “Lido Shuffle”.

Thanks!

I bought Silk Degrees back in 1976.

Just looked at it; still in mint condition.

Back then, I was a audiophile. Used to buy a record, record it to cassette, then wrap the album in a soft rubber sleeve and never play it again unless/until the tape wore out and rerecord again.

By 1977 I had a Harmon-Kardon amp and tuner, Bose 901 speakers, Technics SL-10 turntable, Technics 263-AU cassette recorder. Best system in the barracks!

I still have my Bose 501’s and some old Kenwood stuff from the 70’s. Amp, tuner, equalizer, turntable, etc. Plan on making a hangout room out of the bonus room over my garage that we never did anything with. May even try to find a black light. lol

His best work was “Somebody Loan me a Dime” - great bluesy tune enhanced by Duane Allman on guitar.

My mom used to play “Silk Degrees” when it came out in the ‘70s - I wasn’t a fan back then but “Lowdown” has really held up well over the decades. Great song, smooth as ever and crafted by some real pros.

One of those albums like Sgt. Pepper, Gaudi by Alan Parsons, Camouflage by Rod Stewart, Moby Grape, where every single song is great.

“Cell phone ringer is now the beginning of “Lido Shuffle”.”

Good choice, but I’ll stick with my ‘mooing’ cow. It’s unmistakable.
