As face masks fly off the shelves amid rising fears over the COVID-19 illness, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health have just issued a helpful guide about which types of beards and mustaches will make those masks less effective, and which will be OK.
Bottom line: Most beards, and a few mustaches, prevent the mask from making a complete seal against the skin.

X for me.
I saw a 15 yr old boy of European extraction wearing one in Flushing NY yesterday. First time I ever saw any one who wasn’t Asian, female, wearing one.
I hate it when that happens.
MarketWatch is looking for clicks I see....the “beard/mask guide” was published by the CDC in November of 2017:

Need to include the ‘Rip Van Winkle’ beard.
Or at least the “Civil War General” beard. I always want to try for that, but it gets too annoying at about a Bandholz (whoever that was), and I have to cut most of it off.
Took me back over 50 years when I worked at a Shakey’s Pizza...
Is this guide sponsored by Gilette?
Solution for my fellow bearded folk. https://www.zoro.com/alphatec-encapsulated-suit-level-a-rear-entry-l-66-805/i/G0096389/?gclid=CjwKCAiA7t3yBRADEiwA4GFlIyeFgPY0CxpaXfRs4dwRkxfc2Q0zfcYnaTj44taqD8j9D873minP6BoC86QQAvD_BwE
Yes, and add an additional $500M for each reprint. Those fkng racist bastard at the CDC produced this guide for white men only. Obviously they want all other ethnic groups and robust women to die! /s
I remember when that ruling came out..CO made us all shave our beards in the middle of patrol!
It’s not stupidity, there’s a reason no one in the military is allowed to have any facial hair other than a mustache and you have twice a day in training, you never know when us sneeky cadre will lob a can of CS at the recruits to test their skills of masking up effectively. Same shave schedule on active duty in an area where chemical or biological weapons might be used. Unless you are socom then opsec and blending with the locals might mean facial hair but they are not expected to survive a gas attack anyways.
Masks do not seal around facial hair. This graphic is years old they just posted it again. Fun fact oil rig workers also cannot have facial hair in areas where H2S gas might be found the breather masks won’t seal and you will be dead after a few breaths or less of H2S I have to shave every third week if I’m on rig rotation just enough time to grow back a full beard only to cut it off.
This means the bearded savage allahu akhbar crowd will be at risk.
“The masks dont really prevent it so forget about the masks.”
N95 masks with open eyes are useless against an aerosol virus the virus is not only on droplets that a N95 should stop if properly worn and sealed most people won’t have this right anyways. That said full face masks with double edge seals and P100 ratings or higher will catch sub micron aerosolized virus particles that viruses like measles and it appears covid19 are capable of being transmitted by. Double seal full face masks before the bug 3 or more months ago were $150+ each and filters were $20 or more per pair now if you can find them on an auction they are tens of thousands of dollars. Why because people who have experience with chem/bio materials know P100 or higher is the only effective PPE for most nasty bugs. I have 4 I’m so tempted to sell a couple and get a class III NFA item with the proceeds capitalism at it’s finest I say.
*facepalm*
They probably mean well, but geez....
I just grew back my goatee & mustache after not being able to have one for the last three years due to my job. I guess if I die, I die. Screw it.
As a Bandholz, I guess Im just gonna die.
None of this matters since there aren’t any masks available.
I’m gonna die as a Walrus.
