You know, it’s strange ...I’ve never known anyone to die of the flu, other than a few isolated freak cases you see in the news. And I’m a healthcare provider. Yet we hear this statistic pounded into us every single day. I do hear of people dying from cancer and pneumonia, and plenty of overdoses.
Maybe it’s just me.
It’s not the flu. The flu is endemic, worldwide, and the Wuhanic Plague is not endemic worldwide, so comparing them in the way you nothing-burger guys do is deceitful.
Perhaps conspiracy theories that this is some plot to take out the President is disinformation intended to make us under respond to this problem. It’s just as valid a theory with just as much evidence to support it.
I am really curious how the collapse of an economy that the President was trying to disentangle us from isn’t going to ultimately bolster the President. “See, I told you we were too dependent on the Chinese Communists” is a very winning argument. It goes well with “Bernie wants to turn us into Communist China - his own guys even say so - and look what happened to them!”
So stop being silly about some nefarious Deep State plot to overthrow Trump by releasing a bioweapon in China.
CHow would clearing cookies help their demand for money?
You need to explain how you think comparing this to flu stats somehow means something.
Sure..it’s a freak case until it happens to you.
And it did to me.
Flu/Pneumonia/Sepsi Death in less than 4 days
Those who run around and think they are immune are kidding themselves.
It just takes one FREAK case to claim a loved one.
I have read that china is cremating 1,200 a day. that would add up to a lot more that 3,000 total. Why would they bring in 40 commercial crematoriums for only 3,000 dead?
You would think pilots/flight crews would be our “Canary in the Coal Mine” nobody is breathing in more Coronavirus contaminated air than these folks. Why isn’t this hitting them hard? This has been going on for months now and yet nothing ?
btw, that was a healthy athletic (but not super athletic) teenager that was felled by a tiny germ.
It can happen to anyone. Not just the old and frail
First woman I loved died from the flu. It affected her heart.
This is a bit of an irresponsible post. Depending on what kind of health care worker you I can see your perspective, however, being a critical care physician I can tell you that influenza kills many people. I have seen at least 100 cases this year of influenza with ARDS and requirement for mechanical ventilation. There was a particularly bad influenza about 5 years ago which put a lot of people in the ICU and there were a lot of deaths associated with it. I assure you that (to quote Mr. Biden) not a joke — influenza is a scary disease and can kill. The statistics are correct.
exactly. Plenty of info is readily available that completly blows away the argument that this is “just like a flu.” I suspect we have two types, morons and people who have a vested interested in claiming that we don’t need to be prepared and take precautions.
How much of that in patients you have seen is related to the cytokine storm issue? Or is there no way to really tell without autopsy, etc.
Should be called the “Bezos Blog”.
Read post 4. The total has not been updated since that change was made. If you add up all the other US cases, there are 17, by my count.
You are right, most people die from Flu related complication when they have other heath issues.
The Coronavirus is most likely causing flu related complications leading to deaths in China and other places.
Can pneumonia be a flu related complication?
Sorry I have lost a 82 year old Aunt to Flu related complication. Also lost my Great Uncle/Aunt to the Spanish flu back in 1920, most likely flu related complication.
I am sure a flu related complication will take my wife out too, she has ACC in the windpipe. That is why the Doctor insist on her getting the flu and Pneumococcal shots each year. Bet you never heard of ACC too?
Off to take my Cold medicine.
I kind of think that there are probably a ton more infections than we see reported, but that like its cousins in the corona virus family is likely a self limited infection that goes away with symptomatic support. Think of the number of colds you get in a life time -- each one of those is a unique virus to your system, and yet you will likely say they all acted the same, fever, chills, sore throat, snotty nose...got better in 5 -7 days. Time will tell, but if this were the disaster that we think it is the evidence simply isn't there.
The regular flu has a mortality rate of 0.1% meaning those that get it have a very low probability of death.
This flu has a much higher mortality rate which seems to be between 2 and 3%. For example AIDS/HIV has a mortality rate of 1.7%. SARS is 9.6% and MERS is 34%. Ebola is 50%.
Problem is this Corona version of the flu looks like it’s easily transmitted even before symptomatic. Hard to control the spread so it hits a larger population quickly. Therefore it can overwhelm the ability to treat it and control the spread. It’s a case for closed borders and travel restrictions internally.
I assume by cytokine storm you mean septic shock. Mostly it is influenza yielding secondary pneumonia with associated shock and ARDS
OMG one NEW case of a virus is NOW headline news, Netherlands reported ONE CASE and yes that also was headline news GEEZE!!!
