You know, it’s strange ...I’ve never known anyone to die of the flu, other than a few isolated freak cases you see in the news. And I’m a healthcare provider. Yet we hear this statistic pounded into us every single day. I do hear of people dying from cancer and pneumonia, and plenty of overdoses.

Maybe it’s just me.

Sure..it’s a freak case until it happens to you.

And it did to me.

Flu/Pneumonia/Sepsi Death in less than 4 days

Those who run around and think they are immune are kidding themselves.

It just takes one FREAK case to claim a loved one.

This is a bit of an irresponsible post. Depending on what kind of health care worker you I can see your perspective, however, being a critical care physician I can tell you that influenza kills many people. I have seen at least 100 cases this year of influenza with ARDS and requirement for mechanical ventilation. There was a particularly bad influenza about 5 years ago which put a lot of people in the ICU and there were a lot of deaths associated with it. I assure you that (to quote Mr. Biden) not a joke — influenza is a scary disease and can kill. The statistics are correct.

You are right, most people die from Flu related complication when they have other heath issues.

The Coronavirus is most likely causing flu related complications leading to deaths in China and other places.

Can pneumonia be a flu related complication?

Sorry I have lost a 82 year old Aunt to Flu related complication. Also lost my Great Uncle/Aunt to the Spanish flu back in 1920, most likely flu related complication.

I am sure a flu related complication will take my wife out too, she has ACC in the windpipe. That is why the Doctor insist on her getting the flu and Pneumococcal shots each year. Bet you never heard of ACC too?

Off to take my Cold medicine.

The people who die of the flu are the very young and very old (or immune compromised) who get pneumonia. My favorite way of avoiding anything like that is to take Mucinex and Sudafed and it helps to keep it from dropping into my chest. I think that gives your body a chance to fight it off.

Wash hands, keep house clean, load up on Mucinex, Sudafed and Sambucol. Hit it the minute you feel something coming down on and don’t wait until you are sick. My two cents......it works for me

Usually, it’s bacterial sepsis that does the killing in that it rides in on the damage due to flu especially if the flu settles into pneumonia and fluid accumulates due to cytokine damaged tissues due to SIRS. Very rare that the virus kills the body directly; its the body’s response that can set us up for failure. I am an ICU nurse and I have seen it frequently enough, but most get turned around quickly with abx’s and steroids, pressors, and fluid support. If shock and kidney failure occurs, CVVHD gentle dialysis can be used.(The mortality rates climb based on the number of body systems showing damage)

Flu deaths are usually 1-2 percent totals of all flu cases and usually take out folks who haven’t taken care of themselves, or are very old, or the very young. So that’s probably why you haven’t seen too many direct flu deaths.
