The Influenza Pandemic of 1918 [Same Mortality Rate as COVID-19]
Stanford University ^ | February 1, 2005 | Staff

The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed more people than the Great War, known today as World War I (WWI), at somewhere between 20 and 40 million people. It has been cited as the most devastating epidemic in recorded world history. More people died of influenza in a single year than in four-years of the Black Death Bubonic Plague from 1347 to 1351. Known as "Spanish Flu" or "La Grippe" the influenza of 1918-1919 was a global disaster.

Among the many things that must be determined with this virus is what the mortality rate in each and every nation where it’s found.

That apparent wide variance is definitely very important to understanding the disease.

I’ve read 2% as the mortality rate.

The root of that 2% figure seems to predominantly be news reports using very bad math using the deaths so far, divided by the reported sick (which are an unknown portion of the actual sick).

Even with good math, it is probably too soon to tell what the actual figure is anywhere, as the time to die and the time to recover are different - which will inflate the death rate. At best we can determine now is rough bounds.

Outside of China, the death to recovered+dead percentage is currently over 10% and climbing.

All figures are extremely unreliable as we don’t have good sampling to determine how many actually are sick, we are less that 8 weeks (based upon official China) or about 3 weeks, into what appears to be an up to 6-week cycle from infected to recovered.

Some people are running around crazy and scare-mongering in at least partial hysteria. A lot of others are poo-pooing with flatly illogical comparisons. There are reasonable precautions to take well away from either extreme.

I was thinking about the Q stuff, too. I wonder how many folks are in both camps. . .

OMG, take your own advice.

There have been so many posts, from suspect sources, that have made this flu much more than it really is. People travel to China and take it back and spread the virus in other countries. Should we all just stop traveling? This is being whipped up as some catastrophe that needs more attention. The number of posts proves my point.

The sky is falling, not. As we hit warmer weather the flu will diminish considerably, and eventually competely. Then we will all wonder why so much ink and consideration was expended on it. I see at least 10-20 posts a day about this subject. China is by far the hardest hit, and Asia is the prominent location of this virus. Yeah, some non Asian locales have reported cases because people visit China and carry it back to the countries they actually reside in. There is no epidemic let alone a pandemic that this hysteria is manufactured to breed.

Most of this is because China is not truthful, but the same holds true for a lot of these sources as well.

The CDC warning issued, was from, wait for it, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, Rod Rosenstein's sister.

Pretty close. I've got 8.4%

I don't generally post my day to day guesses, because they are largely based on phony ChiCom data. I only bother doing the calculations because I think they are lying about both the number of cases and the number of fatalities and those lies more or less cancel each other out.

What I'm really concerned about isn't what governments are SAYING I'm paying much more attention to what they are DOING.

Those actions are way, hugely far, all out of proportion to a response to any normal illness, even a bad year's flu.

That worries me.

From the video:

Spanish Flu got its name because Spain, not in the war, was the only country accurately reporting on losses from the deadly flu.

Did I say you were? But you are constantly posting articles, many of them quite suspicious as to their true agenda. Why is that? Because it is news? No, because you are the hysterical type as far as I can see. Actually I click on very few of these articles, because it is a virus that is infecting people, just like the other flu viruses that affect people every year.

The movie pandemic won this year because of its timing to the flu season, and the hysteria generated over this flu.

The majority of the people that visit this site will not catch the virus, nor will they know anyone who does.

So why so many posts on the subject? As far as I can see, the only reason is hysteria being generated by people who are prone to hysteria.

My post was to quell the hysteria, and to hopefully reduce the nonsense posts that I have seen that make unsubstantiated claims devoid of any real facts, but rife with speculation and hearsay from rather dubious sources.

My father was 7 when the Spanish Flu hit the US. He told me that daily there was a horse-drawn wagon that would come down the street to pick up the dead.

“So COVID-19 has about the same mortality rate as the Spanish Flu”

Take into consideration that the Spanish Flu had that mortality rate with 1918 medicine and the Wuhanic Plague has that mortality rate with 2020 medicine. While statistically the outcome might be the same, clearly the Wuhanic Plague is much deadlier. Fortunately, it’s not 1918.

Containment is key.

There are a lot of people spouting factoids and opinions which are decidedly pessimistic. Fully one third of all people are pessimistic by nature while a third are generally optimistic. Then there is the pliable middle third that are ambiguous most of the time. The pessimists are miserable and don’t want to be alone so they constantly spew out reasons not to be happy so they can convince most of the middle third to join them in misery and unhappiness. They are very much like socialists.

We should be careful of course: wash your hands frequently. Stay away from crowds. Eat at home food you cook for yourself. Keep a supply of food and clean water. Stay off of public transportation. Get vaccinated for everything you can. Works for colds flu hepatitis Ebola SARS and tuberculosis. Don’t sow panic and fear.

It seems like there are those that always need to be scared of something and there are also people who enjoy making others scared as well. Truth is hard to come by.

“Remember the great worldwide economic collapse after the Spanish flu epidemic? It was called “The Roaring Twenties”.”

So you’re saying that it’s okay if a ton of people die because it will be good for the economy?

Although, I seem to recall that at the end of the Roaring Twenties there was a bit of a downturn.

That’s bullharkie. The 14th Century Black Death took about half of the worlds population, and the 1918 Infulenza killed tens of thousands and took a lot fewer than did the plague, but the 1918 bug was a much more serious problem than is the current corona panic bug. If you’ve had influenza within the past few years, you were sicker than you’ll be with this corona virus.

Yup. The wartime censors inside the warring nations did not want to dampen morale with stories of disease in their ranks.

“I think what made the Spanish flu worse was the fact it happened when US troops were spreading the disease around war-ravaged Europe at a very high rate.”

And, there were no antibiotics.

It’s not the flu.

I don’t think the Chinese would destroy their own economy when in a few years they could go right back to destroying ours. They have never cared about individual human lives and still don’t, so a few cases of the sniffles wouldn’t even be a speed bump for them. They are trying to continue to exist.

But you are partially right - Don’t panic.

Don’t panic. Prepare and be vigilant.

“So you’re saying that it’s okay if a ton of people die because it will be good for the economy?”

I was worried what I said might be taken that way. No, I’m saying the principle concern is those lives. The economy ought to do just fine, judging by history, in spite of the market meltdown.

But you are constantly posting articles,

Nope. I've posted very few articles.

I am pinging to dozens of articles posted by other FReepers a day.

Why do I do this? Because a couple hundred FReepers have specifically and explicitly asked to be on the emerging diseases ping list, which I run.

Since this 2019-nCoV kerfuffle started about 20 people have asked to be added, and maybe 3 or 4 to be removed.

You think you're tired of the posts? You don't know the half of it! I try to read all the threads and do manage to filter out some of the duplicates and hyperventilating stuff. I don't always succeed, particularly when several come in at once. I owe that to everyone who has trusted me to be their clipping service. It's a burden which I've willingly assumed and a service I am glad and privileged to provide.

All you have to do is ignore my posts. I'm sorry if that is too much for you to do...
