Jif is releasing a limited-edition jar of GIF peanut butter in a collaboration meant to be as smooth as the product itself.
The purpose is to "settle the great debate" over how to pronounce the looping image format that has overtaken in the internet, J.M. Smucker Company (SJM), the brand's manufacturer, said in a press release.
Although Jif is obviously pronounced with a "soft G," people often mispronounce the word "GIF," which is short for Graphics Interchange Format. It's said with a "soft G like the peanut butter and not a "hard G." That's according to creator Steve Wilhite, who made the declaration in 2013 while accepting a Webby Award.
Regardless of the official ruling, the internet has remained divided. Jif is partnering with GIPHY, a GIF search engine, to "put a lid on this decade-long debate": Both GIF and the peanut butter are pronounced "Jif."

I don’t have the image handy but the patent for toilet paper has the image of the paper coming from over the top of the roll.
Where I work, the new guys get the title of "General Utility Worker" or "GUW" for short. For some reason, everyone pronounces that as "goo."
You know, in order to say things like, "Get your ass up here, you f*cking goo!" to the new guy.
They didn't like it when I pointed out that the "G" in "general" is soft, so they were actually mispronouncing "GUW."
"Get your ass up here, you f*cking j..." yeah maybe not.
Or smeared on a banana!

“Likewise, if the creator is adamant that it’s a soft G, then ‘graphics’ should be pronounced ‘Jraphics’ ...”

Years ago, (1973, I think) I was in an Effective Speaking Course as a college Freshman. I wrote to JIF and they sent me a very nice letter with lots of Info about their product. I used that info.
Always partial to JIF, ever since.
That is so bad that it is good.
Oh, BTW, around here it is MLK Boulevard.
Any idea who makes the peanut butter? Reeses?
"Any" is a three-letter word, and I hear it pronounced at least three different ways, none of which reflect the way it's spelled.
I never buy Jif or Skippy. I only eat peanut butter made with peanuts and salt, nothing else.
Over is more sanitary
