Richard Nixon defeats Senator George McGovern (D-South Dakota) and is re-elected President of the United States.
With only 55 percent of the electorate voting, the lowest turnout since 1948, Nixon carried "ALL" states but Massachusetts, taking 97 percent of the electoral votes.
During the campaign, Nixon pledged to secure peace with honor in Vietnam. Aided by the potential for a peace agreement in the ongoing Paris negotiations and the upswing in the American economy, Nixon easily defeated McGovern, an outspoken peacenik whose party was divided over several issues, not the least of which was McGoverns extreme views on the war.
McGovern had said during the campaign, If I were President, it would take me twenty-four hours and the stroke of a pen to terminate all military operations in Southeast Asia. He said he would withdraw all American troops within 90 days of taking office, whether or not U.S. prisoners of war were released.
To many Americans, including many Democrats, McGoverns position was tantamount to total capitulation in Southeast Asia. Given this radical alternative, Nixon seemed a better choice to most voters.

Will history repeat itself? Nixon carried “ALL” states but Massachusetts
If Bolshevik Bernie is the nominee, I doubt if Trump will repeat Nixon’s 49 state romp but 40 states may be in reach.
I wasnt alive back then. What was the election like? Did most people tune out after McGovern got the nomination, other than when Eagleton got kicked off?
I think Trump will win handily. But I would not bet on a 49-state win with today’s Cheatercrats in the machinery.
Correct. No way does Trump get CA, WA, HI, OR, NY, MA, VT, MD. If he did get NJ or DE, it would be by a few thousand votes.
Of course if only celebrities voted, McGovern would have won in a landslide.
I voted Nixon.
I doubt that very seriously.
I think WA is possible for trump. My state of Oregon will go Dem by the closest margin in a long time. WA has a LOT of military and after Trump pulls out of Afghanistan...you get the gist I’m sure.
There is a caveat with this particular election. The GOP lost a net of 2 seats in the Senate; an amazing 10 seats flipped parties, with the ‘Rats scoring 6 and the GOP 4. The same class of Senate seats is up in this cycle.
Plugz Biden ran to the right of his elderly incumbent opponent, J. Caleb Boggs, and won by less than 3,200 votes out of 220,000 cast.
The GOP only netted an 11 seat gain in the House.
If we lost just two seats in the Senate, we would still have a 51-49 majority.
its weird..you can watch McGoverns acceptance speech from the 1972 dem convention on you tube..you would swear its 2020...the media and the far left were just giddy that they had taken over and defeated the moderates of their party. John Kenneth Galbreath and that crowd were literally dancing in a circle with glee and danced themselves right into a 49 state loss. They hated Nixons guts..blamed everything on him..the war ..Kent State...racism, the usual. They kept protesting the war, even though all combat forces had been removed for over a year..Nixon was wrapping it up and they hated that he had kept his promise...made them gag to say it, as he said at a press conference...McGovern wanted to give every person a 2000 dollar “peace payment”. He kept demanding that Nixon debate him...Nixon just ignored him and crushed his dumb ass in November of that year...
Reagan was my first Presidential election, but I do remember Nixon.
I remember my old man saying that the “commie dems were railroading him”.
McGovern’s campaign was inept and the Democratic party was badly split, with many conservative Democrats openly dismissive of McGovern. The Nixon campaign had a tightly controlled, take no chances air about it and sought to maximize Nixon’s margin of victory even at the expense of other GOP candidates on the ballot. The result was that Nixon’s victory was without coat-tails and did not bring in many other Republican victories. And there was that nagging problem of a mysterious break-in at the Watergate building.
Yep and in less than two years hes forced to resign
Funny how that works
GOPe and Dems doing reach arounds across the aisle
Sound familiar
>>taking 97 percent of the electoral votes.
remember when we were warned not to try to impeach Obama because he’d been popularly elected?
remember when we were warned there would be backlash that would impact “the party candidates” (president and congressional) in the “next” election?
don’t listen to political “advice” from democrats.
democrats wanted to impeach Nixon in his first term long before Watergate
shades of dems searching for a shifting reason to impeach Trump (went from Russia to Ukraine).
“...democrats wanted to impeach Nixon in his first term long before Watergate...”
Proving once again that they’ve been total and complete sh*t for a very long time.
leftist have been at it for a long time
the are in for the long game and have taken over our culture.
