The death toll from the novel coronavirus that originated in China crossed 2,000 this week, but new research suggests that most cases of the illness are mild.
A new report from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed records of all of China's reported cases of the virus from December 8 to February 11 — a total of 72,314 patients. (For the latest official case total and death toll, see Business Insider's live updates.)
The researchers found that 80.9% of the confirmed cases were mild. Those patients might experience a fever or dry cough but weren't likely to have difficulty breathing or to develop a severe lung infection. The study also found that infected people could show no symptoms at all — that was the case for 1.2% of the patients.
A far higher portion of asymptomatic cases, however, has been found on the Diamond Princess cruise ship. The ship is host to the largest number of diagnosed COVID-19 cases outside China: at least 621. But 322 of those patients showed no symptoms, according to Japan's Ministry of Health.

Key language: 1.2% OF THE PATIENTS. Most infected people who are asymptomatic ARE PROBABLY NOT PATIENTS, so asymptomatic infections are probably being undercounted.
Yup!
“About 80% of novel coronavirus cases are mild”
The first wave of the Spanish flu was pretty much the same.
while some never show no symptoms
If it’s mild, then why the drastic quarantines?
RE: If its mild, then why the drastic quarantines?
Because it is SUPER INFECTIOUS, 10 Times more contagious than the flu and still twice more fatal.
“Are they contagious even when asymptomatic?”
Yes. (Chinese gal infecting Germans is one example)
So having 50% of the folks as “Typhoid Mary” is not a good thing.
True that !
That "1.2% OF THE PATIENTS" implies that they were seen by a healthcare professional,
and remain undetected as carriers.
Those who are asymptomatic continue to remain in the general population, infecting others.
The situation is further complicated by problems with the testing kits
giving false negative results, according to one recent article,
as high as 70% false reports.
I can appreciate tracking serial contagion running in families,
however, when dealing with asymptomatic virus carriers, trackers would run into a 'dead end'.
At that point, I imagine control and tracking to be very frustrating to researchers.
He meant that people roam around shedding virus like its the job, and business is good.
Sounds like Hillary speaking to a black audience.
Please take not of the drop in reports of new cases. It is Mainland China
related, and is making these questionable numbers from the start, look
even worse.
In the last day or so the leadership of China stated they have done a
a lot of work to end COVID-19, and local Wuhan leaders would be held
responsible for reports of new cases.
In totally unrelated news, deaths from ingrown toenails went off the charts in the provinces.
