Astronomical Images of Nebulae and Galaxies to Jeremiah Clark's 'Prince of Denmark's March,' a Trumpet Voluntary. I am awed by the vastness and the beauty of space. A trumpet voluntary conveys that awe perfectly.

These images filled my head in the days when echoing footsteps were said to be the ghost of William Hershel following me in the darkness of the Adler Planetarium's lower level. Sometimes in the brightly lit cities we forget just how much beauty is in the night skies.

And Captain Kirk got there first.

I still haven’t warmed up to the artificial colors they put into the images.

The colors are typically enhanced using filters to eliminate a lot of the grey tones, but the colors are real. I still prefer no filters, however, since it looks more natural (more bland as well, but more natural).

Sure, they use false colors, as the terraview images do, but there are such true rich colors to be seen. I fell completely in love with the beauty of the sky the first time I saw the brilliant blue and gold of Albireo through a telescope. I made it all the way through 3 1/2 years of physics at U of Chicago holding on to that image. Then I met Schroedinger's Equations and I knew I wasn't meant to be an astronomer. But those early images through the telescope were so richly colored.

The descriptions of some of the NASA images do use the term “false color.”

“False color” is used when images outside the visible spectrum are taken, and real colors are used to substitute for the ones you can’t see. Those you can usually spot right away.

“but the colors are real”

If that’s true then it makes me feel better about the pictures.
