The colors are typically enhanced using filters to eliminate a lot of the grey tones, but the colors are real. I still prefer no filters, however, since it looks more natural (more bland as well, but more natural).

Sure, they use false colors, as the terraview images do, but there are such true rich colors to be seen. I fell completely in love with the beauty of the sky the first time I saw the brilliant blue and gold of Albireo through a telescope. I made it all the way through 3 1/2 years of physics at U of Chicago holding on to that image. Then I met Schroedinger's Equations and I knew I wasn't meant to be an astronomer. But those early images through the telescope were so richly colored.
