Seven up, seven cleared: New York City avoids coronavirus yet again; No known cases in NYC so far!

The sixth and seventh suspected coronavirus cases in New York City came back negative, the city’s Health Department reported Wednesday.
Despite grave concerns about the spread of the virus which originated in China weeks ago, every single suspected case reported in the city turned out to be false alarms. The Centers for Disease Control tested samples collected from patients in New York City and found that all of them were not infected.
“All negative for novel #coronavirus in NYC!” the Health Department celebrated in a Feb. 12 tweet. “@CDCgov has confirmed that the 7th person tested in the city has come back negative. We now have zero cases pending.”
Though the news has been good in New York City, concern about coronavirus remains high across the world. The city rolled out last month a proactive plan designed to contain the spread of the bug while also providing the best care possible to anyone who might become infected.
Panic set in across the city on Feb. 1 when NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue reported a patient exhibiting symptoms of coronavirus, such as fever, cough and/or shortness of breath. The next day, two more individuals hospitalized in Queens shared the same symptoms.
All three patients had told physicians that they recently visited China, where the outbreak began. Yet all three, and four others thought to be infected this month, were ultimately cleared following CDC testing.
Even so, fears and misinformation about coronavirus caused a downturn in activity in Chinatown and other neighborhoods across the city with large Chinese populations. Officials have gone out of their way to tell the public there’s nothing to fear visiting and shopping in the communities.
The Health Department reminds the public to follow the same precautions normally taken during cold and flu season:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing.
- Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t available.
- Stay home if you don’t feel well.
- Seek medical care if you exhibit flu/coronavirus symptoms, and alert your health care provider if you’ve recently traveled to the Hubei province in China.
- Get a flu shot if you haven’t already done so.
More information on the coronavirus can be found on the Health Department’s website.

Did they use the GOOD test kits? Or the FAULTY test kits to clear them?

Get a flu shot if you havent already done so.I'd rather get the coronavirus shot. Oh wait...that won't be ready for 14 months at the earliest.

New York has the largest Chinese population outside of China, 682,265 people. It just seems unlikely that not one of them (or any of the other 8 million New Yorkers) travelled to Asia over the last couple months and came back sick or carrying coronavirus.

you can never know, those wuhan people has been all over the world if you look at a flight tracker map. And now that even non asians are suspect if they have been in a room with an infected person.
heck, the white UK citizen caught it in Singapore, then spread to people in France and UK. what a leap.

They must get the best kits there, not the 30-50% accurate ones.

Did they use the GOOD test kits? Or the FAULTY test kits to clear them? The faulty ones only had a 70% false negative failure rate...
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

“70% false negative failure rate”
So, good enough for government work?

On 2/12, I predicted
2/13 21:30, 1425 dead, actual 1383, 2.8% low.
2/14 21:30, 1500 dead
2/15 21:30, 1990 dead
If I’m close (±15%) I’ll tell you how...

Yes, especially if the government in question wants to downplay the actual disease rate...

Even coronavirus is afraid of what it might catch in New York.

Everyone is in such a state of panic over the Corona virus, or the Tsing-tao virus or whatever you want to call it, we seem to be ignoring the plain old flu virus that comes around every year about this time. I’m more likely to contract that virus and suffer its effects (and dangers) than I am the Corona virus.
But I suppose the Corona virus is “sexier” in the news biz, so it gets the headlines.

elsewhere, people can test negative more than once, then test positive.

Kind of like pregnancy tests - I had to “reinfect” my wife several times before we got a positive...

That’s brilliant cautions from NY. I’m sure a Kleenex tissue will stop the virus since anything under a N95 mask won’t. And make sure you don’t use that tissue hand when paying for that Starbucks. And don’t bump your sneeze sleeve against anyone or anything. And please sit in the doctor’s waiting room and use the restroom to pass it on to as many people as you can. Woo hoo, good to know those tests worked 100% on the first try. s/

R0 over 3 is going to be hard to contain. That R0 value is related to the fact that there is a 14 day asymptomatic virus production & shedding period.
https://web.stanford.edu/~jhj1/teachingdocs/Jones-on-R0.pdf
You had better be praying to God that it is not very deadly, because most of us are probably going to end up with it.
That is what people are missing. Even if China is couching case numbers, it’s very high, and indicates high R0.
Like someone else here noted in reply to your message: “It’s just the flu, bro.”
But much more contagious, and unknown mortality rate. Even if the death rate is lower, we could still get a doubling of influenza kill numbers just because more people will get it.
I sincerely pray it is only as deadly as the flu in the worst case.
Here is what really bothers me: We have satellites on China continuously, every day. The dearth of leaks from CIA, NSA, etc. is deafening in itself. You’d think we could debunk the crematorium rumors, very easily. If they are not commenting, it means they are attempting to not have to lie to the USA public, in my book. Additionally, do we really not have human intelligence on the ground ... unless it is all dead, I guess...
I mean... do you really want to tell me that the most well funded intelligence and military complex in the world can’t tell us what is *really* going on in China, or at least confirm that China is lying or telling the truth? Because they can, and the administration is leaving us in the cold on confirmation, and publishing the Chinese numbers as the only facts.

BTW, not criticizing the admin .... they may have to keep this clinically silent to get all the preparations in place to handle what is coming next.
I can’t imagine the amount of hw that will have to be mobilized to get all the required medical equipment distributed to the areas needed, parts supply chains up and running (remember, Chinese components are now becoming unavailable).
And then when the panic really does set it -— everyone jumping to the emergency room for the sniffles, which will then spread the virus to all the hypochondriacs, etc.
