39 new cases in Japan. They were found on the Diamond Princess cruise ship off Yokohama, raising the ships total to 174.
Virus is in the AC vents.

NEW: Quarantine officer of Japan’s health ministry diagnosed with coronavirus, defense minister says
That’s my take. If you have a balcony room, maybe you can plug the vents and open the door. Otherwise, you’re screwed.
They are going to have to take the ship out to sea and scuttle it.
“They were found on the Diamond Princess cruise ship”
“Diamond Princess”...aka SS Coronavirus.
LOL. All they have to do is get everyone off of it for a couple of weeks.
Virus can only survive on surfaces for 9 10 days max.
It’s not like the ship is radioactive.
Petri CruisesBring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
I think we should fly them all to Texas.
“What’s that you say?”
“NOT IN MY BACK YARD!”
Everybody says that, silly...
yep, they need help before it is too late, they need to be quarantined separately. although that is a lot of people to handle at once.
We should see if Kaci Hickox has a spare room!
They are only on day 7, so we don’t yet know if it is still spreading on the ship. I know it must be terrifying for those on board. So far, it seems most people show symptoms within 3-7 days, so if we continue to see this many “new” cases over a couple more days, they have to assume the quarantine procedures are not stopping the spread from passenger to passenger. At that point, they will be under massive pressure to allow people off the ship into a purpose built facility, or be evacuated by their home country.
“I think we should fly them all to Texas.”
They are all going to Japanese hospitals. Just piece meal. 10 at a time, then 20 at a time, then 39 at a time.
Japan only has 2000 isolation rooms at hospitals countrywide.
They should isolate the remaining passengers at military bases, tents, etc. Remove the circulating air as a potential source of infection
CDC contact tells American couple on the ship its very likely that the virus is actually in the air

I don’t think so. Just bleach it down and wait 30 days.
And install germicidal UV lights in all the ducts.
That should be standard on cruise ships, if it’s not already.
“in the AC vents”
Yep.
Apparently it wasn’t known at the time that the virus is aerosoled (though it seemed obvious that it would be).
Yet another reason to believe the Chinese government numbers are understated by at least 1 order of magnitude, i.e. they need to add a zero on the end.
They could leave passengers in exterior berths (outside air supply) on the ship.
No idea how many that would be but a lot I’d think.
You need positive pressure in your room. If you have a fan blowing air in from outside that’ll do. But, if you’ve got the virus, you’re going to be a super-spreader.
Hong Kong is experiencing cases where “ventilation” pipes may have caused the virus to spread in an apartment building.
The ventilation pipe was “altered” by a resident and may have led to their infection.
I wonder how many Americans there are, whether they could be removed to a military base for quarantine before things get worse.
