Experts have blamed a form of systemic inflammatory response syndrome called "cytokine storm" for killing some novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)-infected patients who were not very sick in the early stage of infection but eventually died of multiple organ failure, according to Chinese media reports.
The epidemic, which started mid-December in Wuhan, in China's Hubei Province, had claimed more than 800 lives in China as of Feb. 8, including Li Wenliang (李文亮), a 34-year-old ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central Hospital who tried to issue the first warning about the deadly coronavirus outbreak late last year but was silenced by the Chinese authorities.
While most victims have been middle-aged, elderly or suffering from chronic disease according to official Chinese data, Li's death, as well as that of a 39-year-old man in Hong Kong, drew media attention as the epidemic has attacked more than 37,000 people in 28 countries around the world.
According to Chinese media reports, Zhong Ming (鍾鳴), a physician at the department of critical care medicine of Zhongshan Hospital in Shanghai, warned that in some novel coronavirus cases, patients who developed only moderate symptoms at the onset of the disease later fell seriously ill and died of multiple organ failure.
He termed the condition a "storm of inflammations"

The coronavirus can last a while before the downturn from what Ive read. A case in point is the whistleblower Dr. Li Wenliang. He started having mild symptoms on Jan 10, tested negative several times, finally tested positive on Jan 20, and died on Feb 6.
He was only 34
Hopefully, allowed to quote the article...
“But for other patients, new treatments can calm the storm and bring remarkable recoveries. Cron and Behrens both got interested in this through a patient we saw in Pennsylvania, Cron said. Probably the sickest patient I ever saw come out of the ICU unscathed. The doctors treated her with anakinra, a cytokine-targeting therapy that was approved to treat the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis. She turned around and it was magical, Cron recalled. Were both research scientists, so he developed a mouse model [of cytokine storm syndrome] and Ive been studying the genetic and human aspects. Weve identified new genes not previously described as a part of this genetic workup.
In 2016, Cron and Winn Chatham, M.D., professor in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, began a clinical trial at UAB and Childrens Hospital to study the safety of anakinra in patients with signs of severe, potentially life-threatening inflammation. Cron is director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at Childrens of Alabama. Anakinra is remarkably safe, and following this initial study, the researchers hope to begin a larger trial in the future”.

Thats why older people are vaccinated against flu. Their prospect of recovery are lower than for younger people.
cytokene storms not very treatable; mixed results with NAC and steroiods; however the following works, but probably would be available only to the super-rich elite at this point:
Oh f***. This is really bad
..”A storm of inflammations”..
Horrible.
its called a cytokine storm. Young heathy immune systems are especially vulnerable, as in 1918.
This is why I brought a bottle of Benadryl tablets with me.
I had a flu/allergy bout last week in Northern Laos, just south of the China border. When my lungs started filling up I drank lots of hot coffee and took Benadryl. It saved me from pneumonia.
For a day I felt like my head was going to explode, but my chest cleared up real fast.
Benadryl will clear your lungs?
I think it was Rummy Chick who had something like this happen to a family member
The 1918 Spanish Flu did the same thing.
Um, not nearly enough, and it has the disadvantage of leaving the patient open to other infections.
“SARS caused cytokine storm as well”
Cytosorbents Corp. (New Jersey based) makes a small filter cartridge which plugs into a dialysis machine. It’s essentially a blood filter and is approved for use in much of Europe to control Cytokine storm during Open Heart surgery. One cartridge will filter for about eight hours if I recall correctly.
There is potentially numerous applications including sepsis which if effective would save the lives of an incredible amount of people. It’s a slow slog to get through the FDA process in the States and the current FDA testing is for reducing the severity of acute kidney injury, not Cytokine storm.
Meantime someone needs to get on the horn with them stat and get pallets of these filters on order.
Good to know.
I imagine these filters are made in China :(
systemic inflammatory response syndrome called "cytokine storm"
Batten down the nostrils, it's going to be quite a blow!
Maybe 'the storm' doesn't happen until the second or third time a person is infected... this IS a weapon after all...
whoops, sorry, that was yours. [blush]
