MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday said Mexico was in talks to buy a batch of Russian-made military helicopters.
Mexico has long-standing military ties with Russia and the Mexican armed forces use an extensive fleet of Russian-made helicopters.
Lavrov, on a visit to Mexico, said a new supply agreement with Russia's Rosoboronexport arms exporter could follow an earlier purchase of about 50 Russian helicopters.
"The Mexican side is currently considering concrete proposals from Rosoboronexport, including the supply of helicopters," Lavrov said.
In 2018, Mexico's then-incoming President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said he would cancel the planned purchase of eight military helicopters from its main security partner, the United States, as part of cost-cutting measures.

And in a year, the order will be pared down to 25 helicopters and then we’ll see a report of how the complete order of 8 helicopters were delivered. Typical deal with Mexico.
Good OPFOR practice!!!
And one year later the fleet will be grounded due to maintenance issues.
Figure this is actually good news. Any Russian-made helicopters along the US border that stray over are fair game to shoot down since they won’t be mistaken for American.
In wooden crates. Disassembled. With assembly and operations manuals printed in Chinese, French, Farsi, and Urdu. On a three-foot, fold out sheet of paper. And two bolts and a washer will be missing, with a backorder time of eight to twelve weeks. From Vietnam.
Walmart junk. *ugh*
Well if they use them against drug cartels good for them. Who knows what the drug cartels have.
Why wouldnt they purchase the helicopters from the US???
The Mexican military will sell them to the cartels.
Quite possible. American military aircraft are expensive but reasonably safe to fly and capable of sustained heavy use.
For the same reason WE bought Russian helicopters for the Afghan Air Force. We bought and trained them on a fleet of MI-17s. Way cheaper and easier to keep maintained than US products who assume much higher levels of maintenance as normal.
And it’s a good solid machine.
*** Any Russian-made helicopters along the US border that stray over are fair game to shoot down since they wont be mistaken for American. ***
Considering the Mexican Military has made numerous incursions into the US here in TX, and our gov’t’s response was zilch, don’t hold your breath.
“”Why wouldnt they purchase the helicopters from the US???””
Because Mexico would be ‘paying for The Wall’?
Well if they use them against drug cartels good for them. Who knows what the drug cartels have.
*****
More then likely Americans choppers....
Good, they wish to buy not from their contractual neighbor?
Cut their aid!!
