Desperate Chinese citizens unable to buy face masks have deployed fruit rinds and plastic bottle helmets to shield against the deadly coronavirus.
Companies have been working overtime to supply citizens with protective masks amid surging demand as cases of the deadly flu-like virus soared to nearly 8,200 today.
Social media posts show people donning tangerine and grapefruit skins as masks, water-cooler bottle headgear, while pranksters have mocked the health crisis with absurd alternatives, including iceberg lettuce.
It comes as Chinese health officials warned people not to re-use their protective masks after videos emerged of people boiling their surgical masks and hanging them up to dry.
Medical experts warned that this greatly reduces the effectiveness of the masks, a spokeswoman for the Gansu province Health Commission added that they should be discarded after just four hours of use.
With more than 50 million residents on lock-down and 170 deaths in the country, some provinces such as Guangdong have mandated that people wear masks and are handing out fines for offenders.

The required mask, N-95, is sold out.
I am sure that would help with my breathing.
It’s not just old people who have to avoid grapefruit.
Grapefruit juice reacts with a whole host of drugs.
Antihistamines, corticosteroids, anti-anxiety meds, statins, blood pressure drugs, arrhythmia drugs.
It often seems like “what does it not react with?”

Let’s see...plague or plaque...uhm...give me a minute...
That is because grapefruit is a natural detoxifier, and most pharmaceutical medicines are poisons.
We called ‘em “over the shoulder boulder holders.”
The grapefruit makes sense-it is a natural antioxidant when eaten-don’t know about when worn as a mask, but maybe the acid in it is a virus deterrent...
I eat grapefruit and avoid drugs-it works great if you avoid processed food, eat organic, fresh food and get your carbs from veggies and fruits instead of bread and pasta...
When they get older they are called ‘Knee Protectors’.
I had a grapefruit for breakfast. Was disappointed it wouldn’t zest (beats paying the store price for something that’s free) but now it can be recycled as a mask.
These people can’t be serious. There’s a lot of air space around those masks. Wait until they mold and send you to the ER with something worse than the virus.
Guess they didn’t think of staying home.
I tried to use my girlfriends bra as a face mask
Problem was she was still wearing it ...

Do you prefer new or used?
I preferred them filled...
Well it’s not about grapefruit but the sentiment is the same.

Such medical mask only prevent particulates from directly entering the mouth and nose. These types of mask do not seal off the flow of air around the prerimiter of the mask to the face (air leakage).
They need half face respirators and safety glasses with binders.
