Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Firefighters in Florida said a hazmat team responded to a gas station where a man filling up his boat confused a fishing pole holder for the gas tank.

Orange County Fire Rescue said the customer at 7-Eleven in Orlando was attempting to fill up his 18-foot boat about 11:35 a.m. Monday when he accidentally pumped 30 gallons of gas directly into the cockpit.

Fire Rescue said the man pumped about $60 worth of fuel into the cockpit and then put another $40 of gas into the actual gas tank.

The hazmat team was able to siphon most of the gas out of the boat and no injuries or evacuations were reported at the station.

I filled my tank on my old Saab 99 with Diesel accidentally once.

It was a different world then - The station owner handed me a garden hose and I stuck it in the tank and drained the gas into the storm drain on the busy suburban street. Never gave it a second thought. Nobody else driving through and pumping gas did either.

The siphon sounds like an awful lot of work. I mean, one match and the problem is solved.

Back in the 1980s,in South Jersey, I lived in a small house in a marina and was part time caretaker. Every weekend in the summer I saw many an idiot and their brand new boat/floating motel room. The biggest set of knuckleheads were 4 cops from Philly.

I remember when people changed their own oil, then dumped the old oil down storm drains.

Heh. I dumped it in a hole in my small back yard in a suburban neighborhood. I don’t change my own oil any more, except for my tractor and zero turn mower. I burn it.

Someone who is that dumb shouldn’t be boating, especially in the ocean.

And it is Florida.

He made it the old fashioned way...

...part of his inheritance.

That reminds me that I’ll now have to check on the itinerary of the Prime Mistake of Kanadahar. He is likely on vacation once again, of course, likely Florida or some other warm place. After all it is January and who wants to be in d’Ottawa in the winter, especiallywhen there are tax dollars to spend frivolously?
