I’ve been saying, since 2002, that George W. Bush(43) should be commish. He oversaw the resurgence of the Rangers.

He could use the opportunity to make up for his piss-poor performance as POTUS.

Manfred has a dollars and sense problem. Rake in all the dollars you can from the unwitting public, no matter if it makes sense or not.

Can’t wait to get my new $200+ “official” MLB jersey from the Oakland Nikes. Or maybe the San Francisco Nikes. Or even the New York (A) Nikes.

Get rid of the designated hitter. Drop back to 154 games. The season is too long now.

If they had a players union in 1919 there probably would not have been a “Black Sox” scandal in the first place. Historical comparisons like this completely undermine the author’s credibility.

This might sound a little simplistic, but why not install Altuve type buzzer devices in the mitt and glove of catcher and pitcher. An electronic sending key in the mitt finger and receiver in pitcher’s glove? Hopefully the technology is there to encrypt the signal because cheaters like Cora would try to intercept the electronic signal.

Punishing management to the limits previously agreed to but not punishing the players involved is a travesty. The excuse of not wanting to upset the players union assumes the union would actually defend cheating which I find highly unlikely and an untenable position to take. Basically they’re slapping hands and hoping it all blows over. Kind of like the PED scandal in the ‘90s.

I appreciate the ideas here, but, the commissioner is paid by the owners, so he will always be their employee.

The personality of the commissioner could be a factor too. Judge Landis was way before my time, but from what I’ve heard, he was the type who didn’t take crap from anyone, and also didn’t give a damn what people thought of him as he did his job. Someone like that would have a freer hand to deal with baseball’s problems.

If Houston hadn't been moved to the American League a few years ago, they couldn't have cheated against the Dodgers in the World Series.

Who knows if they would have made it to the World Series as the NL champion? If so, they could have cheated against a different team.

Very interesting article and interesting read on Joe Gedeon. Baseball history is fascinating and Judge Landis was an interesting combination.

By current standards, he was certainly harsh, but probably exactly what was needed at the time to clean the sport up. His later legacy wasn't so good. Had Landis retired in 1925 or so, baseball would have probably been integrated at least a decade earlier and Satchel Paige or Judy Johnson would've been the Jackie Robinson of his time.

Eddie Ciocotte, the first White Sox player to confess, was also a decent guy. Major league baseball paid less than being a professional engineer or M.D. in those days. Comiskey has promised him a $5000 bonus if he won 30 games that year.

Cicotte won his 29th game with two weeks to go in the season. At the end of that day, Chicago had a 6.5 game lead over second place Cleveland with 7 games left to play. Cicotte would not pitch again until the final game of the season. By this time, Chicago had clinched the pennant and Comiskey took him out after only two innings and a one run lead, explaining that he was saving his best pitcher for the World Series. This was Sunday, September 30 and the World Series was to start the following Wednesday, October 1.

Comiskey really never did explain why Cicotte had missed his previous two starts, but Cicotte knew the answer-- there was no need to start him with 7 games and 11 days left in the season and a 6.5 run lead nd Comiskey would save $5,000. Chicago only needed to win one game (which they did) or Cleveland only needed to lose one game (they lost three) to clinch the AL pennant. Cicotte took only half the bribe (the $5000 which Comiskey had promised him to win 30) and refused the other half. His career destroyed, he did the best he could to support his family and even part of his extended family the rest of his life.
