Electric taxis will charge up wirelessly as they wait on the rank as part of a £3.4 million trial, ministers announced today.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the new technology could eventually be used by public drivers of electric cars.

Ten taxis in Nottingham will be fitted with the hardware later this year.

When they are parked over pads installed in the ground, their batteries will charge automatically.

The system recognizes the vehicle and bills the driver for the power.

The technology removes the need for cables and fixed charging points. …

Electric cars are great until the time to replace batteries comes, which always will come if you keep it long enough. Those replacements will make a hole in your wallet.

It is sort of free only when you have either sun shining or wind blowing. Not free at night with no breeze.

What kind of time frame and bucks are we talking about?

Thanks in advance. I know nothing about electric cars.

And provide an eco nightmare disposing of them. Expect to see them abandoned in remote places.

I wonder where they will get all the electricity for this new use of electric power?

FINALLY...somebody tells the truth about EVs:
"...reduce emissions and improve air quality"
In reality, they don't do ANYTHING about CO2 (which is a hoax, anyway). But they DO improve urban air quality.

Wouldn’t it be cool if these charging pads were in the pavement at every stoplight in the city? You could drive forever in town and never need to go somewhere to top off the batteries. Every kWh charge you picked up anywhere in town would be automatically billed to you.

Expect it to cost you a good $3,000, including the credit you’ll get for your old battery.

Toyota warranties the hybrid battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles in most states.

“Toyota warranties the hybrid battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles in most states.”

I’ve never heard of a car warranty that wasn’t good in some states. What’s the problem?

Wow.

I guess people take the age of the car battery into consideration when buying a used electric vehicle.

An engine and transmission can go a long time and be good.

sounds like these batteries have a shelf life.

8 years or 100,000 miles.

Average driver drives 15,000 miles a year, which would be 6.6 years.

They won’t cover the battery more than 8 years even if you drive very little. Interesting.

Most are reused or recycled!

It was the same thing when I bought a riding golf cart. It was a used old cart i bought from a golf cart business, but the deal was to install brand new batteries. I used that golf cart for 7 years without a problem, playing 4 rounds of 18 every week on average.

Parking lots, garages, even continuous roads.

Better than the warranty on your car.
